Biography
Matilda Morville was born in or after 1223 (she was underage on 30 September, 1237, which at that time meant under 14 if she was married).
Matilda was the daughter of Eudo de Morville.
By 30 September, 1237, Matilda, not yet 14 years old, was married to Matthew de Columbariis. He died before 1284.
m.2 (ante Jul 1285) Henry Cobham.
Issue:
1.) John Cobham
On 30 September, 1237, at Sherburn in Elmet, Matthew de Columbariis made fine with the king [Henry III] by 60 marks for having seisin of a moiety of the land formerly of Eudo de Morville, because Matthew took to wife Matilda, Eudo's underage daughter and coheir, and for having peace because he married Matilda without the king's licence, and an order to the sheriff of Hampshire told him to take security etc. and make over seisin to Matthew to his use and that of Matilda, his wife, and Elena, her sister, of the manor of Knighton until the manor was partitioned between them by someone who the king will send to do this, retaining in the king's hand the dower that falls to the wife of Eudo until she has surrendered the aforesaid Elena to the king, who is of his gift. After the sheriff of Hampshire had taken security for the same 60 marks, he was to signify this to the sheriff of Dorset and Somerset, whom the king ordered to make over seisin of the manors of Bradpole and Wraxall, having retained the dower of Eudo's wife in the [king's] hand as stated above.
The king then granted to Ralph de Gorges the marriage of Helena, one of the daughters and heirs of Eudo de Morville and Isabella, his wife, and committed to Brother Geoffrey, almoner, and Aymer de St. Amand a moiety of the lands formerly of both Eudo and Isabella to keep to the use of Ralph and Helena for as long as it pleased the king. The sheriffs of Somerset, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Hampshire were ordered that once the lands had been partitioned, they were to cause Brother Geoffrey and Aymer to have full seisin of one moiety and Matthew de Columbariis and his wife, another of the daughters and heirs of the aforesaid Eudo and Isabella, of the other moiety, having retained in the king's hand that moiety of the land, both of the dower and of the inheritance formerly of Isabella, which fell to Matthew and his wife, until the king ordered otherwise. On 17 October, the sheriffs were ordered to take all that land into the king's hand and to keep it safely until the king ordered otherwise.
In 1 Edward I in Wiltshire, Robert, son of Philip Pipard, sued Mathew de Columbers and his wife, Matilda, for the next presentation to the church of Pipardesclive, to which Michael Pipard, the father of Roger and Philip, had presented in the reign of Henry III. Philip's brother, Roger Pipard, had enfeoffed Mathew who was in seisin of the manor, and the jury found for Mathew and Matilda.
