~Abstracts of Inquisitions post Mortem , p. 20, Katherine, daughter and heir of Thomas de Knouselegh. 773
Katherine married Sir Robert de Lathom Knight, son of Sir Robert de Lathom Knight and Amicia de Alfreton. (Sir Robert de Lathom Knight was born about 1224 in Lathom, Lancashire, England and died on 8 Jul 1324-7 Jul 1325 in Lathom, Lancashire, England 824.)
=== Some background and issues concerning Katherine de Knowsley, wife of Robert de Lathom ===
Robert de Lathom and Amicia de Alfreton were the parents of at least two sons: Sir Robert de Lathom, “son and heir” and Thomas de Lathom, who “had a grant of Mosborough from his brother Robert de Lathom, 20 Ed. I. (1292)”. Those two sons were certainly born after the marriage of their parents “before 1252”, so likely born about 1248-1252. This second Robert de Lathom apparently died in 1324-1325 according to an inquisition postmortem “inq. p.m. 18 Edward II”.
This second Robert de Lathom was married to Katherine de Knowsley (also spelled Knowsleigh and Knowslegh), daughter of Thomas de Knowsley. The marriage of Robert de Lathom and Katherine Knowsley, daughter of Thomas de Knowsley, is documented in Lathom of Lathom in Lancashire, Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists, Line 57, British History Online and in a Lathom pedigree in The History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster, Volume 4, pg. 199 [See documents in the Memories section]. However, a Lathom pedigree in Lathom of Lathom in Lancashire, between page 68-69 [See document in the Memories section] reports Katherine is the daughter of Robert de Knowsley, Lord of Knowsley. It appears there is currently no definitive way to determine conclusively who the father of Katherine is: Robert or Thomas, but the preponderance of the historical documents seems to suggest her father is Thomas.
However, there appears currently to be no definitive documentation as to who this Thomas de Knowsley is. He does not seem to appear anywhere outside of those documents referred to above. Some private records suggest he is the son of Adam de Knowsley, but entries in British History Online [See document in the Memories section] reports that Adam de Knowsley’s sons were Henry, Robert and William who used the surnames Knowsley and Huyton indiscriminately. Adam de Knowsley had no son named Thomas, but if Adma’s son named Robert is actually the father of Katherine, then Adam is, indeed, Katherine’s grandfather. If that is the case, Thomas is not her father, but Robert is.
Katherine de Knowsley’s husband Robert de Lathom died in 1325 and Katherine de Knowesley survived her husband, apparently by many years.
Adam de Knowsley’s son named William (de Huyton or de Knowsley) had a son named Robert, but that Robert is much too young to be the father of Katherine. British History Online reports William de Huyton died about 1328 and his son Robert died about 1345. Robert (de Huyton or Knowsley) had a minor daughter at the time of his death named Katherine and that Katherine became the ward of “Katherine, formerly the wife of Sir Robert de Lathom”, suggesting that Katherine de Knowsley was still living in 1345.
Robert de Lathom and Katherine de Knowsley were the parents of Thomas de Lathom “son and heir, aged 24, 18 Edward II (1324-25)”, suggesting Thomas was born in 1300-1301, and a daughter Johanna, according to the Lathom pedigree in the History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster. Thomas de Lathom was married to Eleanor de Ferrers, daughter of Sir John de Ferrers. They were the parents of at least two sons: Sir Thomas de Lathom “son and heir” and Edward de Lathom “had Parbold by gift of his father and one-fourth of Wrightington by grant of his brother”.
