=== Life Sketch ===
BIRTH: Year of birth is an estimate based on ages of his children.
MAR: Henry's wife Margery is mentioned with him in Essex feet of fines as early as 1278 and as late as 1295– 96 (Feet of Fines for Essex, 7 vols. [Colchester: Essex Acrhaeological Association, 1913– 28], 2:28, 33, 81).
DEATH: Henry died shortly before 10 Dec 1297 when the escheator was ordered to take Henry's lands into possession (Calendar of Fine Rolls preserved in the Public Record Office, vol. 1, Edward I, A.D. 1272– 1307 [London: H. M. Stationery Office, 1911], 395). Henry's lands were surveyed in two different inquisitions post mortem dated 4 Jan 1297/8 (Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem and other Analogous Documents preserved in the Public Record Office, vol. 3, Edward I [London: H. M. Stationery Office, 1912], 343); and 23 July 1327 (Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem and other Analogous Documents preserved in the Public Record Office, vol. 7, Edward III [London: H. M. Stationery Office, 1909], 19– 20). The cause of the second ipm was the confiscation of the lands of Eudo la Zouce, husband of Joan Inge, granddaughter of Henry Grapinel, due to his indictment for
a felony. Henry probably died in the service of King Edward I. As a knight holding lands in Oxford, he was summond for service overseas on 7 July 1297. He was summoned to a military council 22 Sept 1297 and appointed Assessor and Collector in Essex on 14
Octobert 1297. He was dead by 10 December of that year, as shown above. See Francis Palgrave, The Parliamentary Writs and Writs of Military Summons, vol. 1 (London, 1827), 643; also Charles Moor, Knights of Edward I, 5 vols., Publications of the Harleian Society, vols. 80– 84 (London, 1929– 32), 1:139. England had invaded Scotland in 1296 and had a large army there at the time of Henry's death.
OCC/TITLES: Knight of Edward I, Sheriff of Hertfordshire.
NOTES: Henry Grapinel had a brother Stephen. They were witnesses to a document dated 16 Edward I [1297– 98] (Canterbury Cathedral Archives, CCA-DCc-ChAnt/S/33B, Agreement, abstracted in TNA Discovery Catalogue [discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk]). These Grapinels were no doubt descendants of one Grapinel who held land in the manor of Prittlewell, Essex, in 1086 (K. S. B. Keats-Rohan, Domesday People: A Prosopography of Persons Occuring in English Documents 1066– 1166 [Woodbridge, Suffolk: Boydell Press, 1999], 237; also Victoria County History of Essex, vol. 1 [1903; reprint Folkestone: William Dawson & Sons, 1977], 485). Henry Grapinel held land in several nearby parishes during the late 13th century
