=== Life Sketch ===
«b»Biography«/b»
William Brereton of Brereton, was born around 1270 (he was arranging the marriage of his daughter in 1301).
William was the son of Sir William Brereton of Brereton and the daughter of Sir Richard de Sonbach, knight.
Sir William married Rose [Latin Roesia], the daughter of Ralph de Vernon, known as the "long-liver", of the ancient family of Barons of Shipbrooke, and his wife Mary Dacre, daughter of the Lord of Dacre. This wedding united the Breretons with the Vernons of "Haddon Hall."
«b»William and Roesia had issue:«/b»
1.) William, who was married to Margery, the daughter of Richard de Bosley;
2.) John, rector of Wallasey;
3.) Peter;
4.) Richard;
5.) Nicholas who married Margaret;
6.) Margery, who was contracted to marry John son of Thomas son of Roger Davenport of Davenport in 1301;
7.) Matilda, who was married to John Dumville.
In 1301, Sir William gave 100 marks to Thomas, son of Roger Davenport, for the marriage of his son John to William's daughter Margery.
Rose was living and married to William in 15 Edward II, 1322, as in that year she and her husband made their son, Richard Brereton, their attorney to receive seizin of lands in Brereton.
William de Brereton and Roes his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, were given land in Teryn co Cheshire, by Simon de Blaston and his wife Joan, and of which William the elder was seised in the reign of Edward III (1327-1377).[4] In 2 Henry V [1414], William and Rose's great-grandson, William de Brereton, Chevalier, sued Nicholas, the son of Roger de Moldeworth for the return of the land in Teryn.
After Sir William's death, his widow Rose married Sir Thomas Davenport of Davenport, and became step-mother of her son-in-law Sir John.
=== Sir William Brereton of Brereton, ward ===
Sir William Brereton of Brereton, ward of Sir Richard Sonba ch (Sandbach), who had grant of the wardship of said Willia m from William de Venables, Baron of Kinderton, to marry hi m or his younger brother, Gilbert Brereton, if William die d under age, to one of the legitimate daughters of Richar d Sandbach. Such were the precious servitudes of our ancest ors; and great must have been the docility and tractabilit y of the adults (and it is a remarkable trait in feudal man ners) in submitting their inclinations in the serious artic le of marriage to the inscrutable wisdom of their seniors . Accordingly we find the heir of Brereton, William, was (n olens volens) married to the daughter of Richard Sandbach . The manor of Sandbach is given in Domesday among the poss essions of the Bigot-Bigod family, whose manors subsequentl y formed the fee of Aldford, of which Sandbach was a depend ency. A family was certainly settled here in the reign of K ing John, who held Sandbach from Aldford fee, and had assum ed the local name. Near the manor house of Sandbach is th e market place containing the Crosses of Sandbach, which ma y indisputably be ranked among the finest monuments of anti quity, of the kind, now existing in the kingdom. They are s upposed to have been erected shortly after the introductio n of Christianity on the places where it was first preached . The present height of the Greater Cross is 16 ft. 8 in.
