=== Hawise of Chester, Countess of Lincoln ( ===
Hawise of Chester, Countess of Lincoln (1180- 6 June 1241/3 May 1243), was an Anglo-Norman noblewoman and a wealthy heiress. Her father was Hugh de Kevelioc, 5th Earl of Chester. She was the sister and a co-heiress of Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester. She was created suo jure 1st Countess of Lincoln in 1232. She was the wife of Robert de Quincy, by whom she had one daughter, Margaret, who became heiress to her title and estates. She was also known as Hawise of Kevelioc.
Hawise was born in 1180 in Chester, Cheshire, England, the youngest child of Hugh de Kevelioc, 5th Earl of Chester and Bertrade de Montfort of Evreux, a cousin of King Henry II of England. Hawise had four siblings, including Maud of Chester, Countess of Huntingdon, Mabel of Chester, Countess of Arundel, Agnes of Chester, Countess of Derby, and a brother Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester. She also had an illegitimate half-sister, Amice of Chester who married Ralph de Mainwaring, Justice of Chester by whom she had children.
Her paternal grandparents were Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester, and Maud of Gloucester, the granddaughter of King Henry I of England, and her maternal grandparents were Simon III de Montfort and Mahaut.
In 1181, when Hawise was a year old, her father died. He had served in Henry II's Irish campaigns after his estates had been restored to him in 1177. They had been confiscated by the King as a result of his having taken part in the baronial Revolt of 1173?1174. Her only brother Ranulf succeeded him as the 6th Earl of Chester.
She inherited the castle and manor of Bolingbroke, and other large estates from her brother to whom she was co-heiress. Hawise became 1st Countess of Lincoln in April 1231, when her brother resigned the title in her favor. He granted her the title by a formal charter under his seal which was confirmed by King Henry III. She was formally invested as suo jure 1st Countess of Lincoln on 27 October 1232 the day after her brother's death.

=== Some background information concerning Helen (Ellen) of Galloway, daughter of Alan, Lord of Galloway, and spouse of Roger de Quincy, Earl of Winchester ===
There is considerable disagreement in some historical records about the fourth child, an unnamed daughter (some private records call her Ragnhild, but it is not known on what basis since the historical records do not name her), of Ragnald (Reginald), King of Man. The following histories: The Scots Peerage, Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists, The Magna Charta Sureties, Caledonia or a Historical and Topographical Account of North Britain and The Buckeley Genealogy [See documents in the Memories section] all report this unnamed daughter was the first wife of Alan, Lord of Galloway, and, as such, was the mother of Helen (or Ellen) of Galloway who married Roger de Quincy, Earl of Winchester.
However, The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy in an entry about the Galloway family [See document in the Memories section] reports a daughter of Roger de Lacy was the first wife of Alan, Lord of Galloway, and that the daughter of Ragnald (Reginald) was Alan's second wife. However, in reporting that supposition, the entry goes on, speaking of Alan, as follows: "married first 'a lady unknown, said to be a daughter of Reginald Lord of the Isles by whom he had two daughters'", contradicting its own claim that Ragnald's daughter was the second wife. Clearly, Ragnald's daughter was the mother of two children, both daughters, with Alan, Lord of Galloway. And the Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists states that Alan's third wife was the daughter of Hugh de Lacy and sister of Roger de Lacy, also contradicting The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy.
The information above is in itself further contradicted by another entry in the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy concerning the Kings of Man [See document in the Memories section] which reports Ragnald's unnamed daughter married Thomas of Galloway, illegitimate son of Alan, Lord of Galloway. Other records report that Thomas died without any posterity, possibly in his father's lifetime, suggesting, perhaps, that Thomas never married. However, it is unlikely Thomas died before his father, Alan, since he fought with his three legitimate half-sisters and their husbands for the Galloway estates, an issue that was settled in favor of the half-sisters by the intervention of the King of Scotland. That would seem to again suggest Ragnald's daughter was the wife of Alan, Lord of Galloway, rather than the wife of Thomas.
In addition to the above information, an additional historical record called Early Sources of Scottish History, Vol. 2 [See document in the Memories section of Alan, Lord of Galloway] makes the following statement: "In the year of the Lord 1229, Alan, the Lord of Galloway, with an immense retinue set out for Ireland; and there married the daughter of Hugh de Lacy ...Rohais". Here is proof of an actual date of the marriage of Alan to a daughter of Hugh de Lacy and that marriage is in 1229, at least 25 to 30 years too late for Alan's wife with the name of Lacy to be the mother of Helen (Ellen) of Galloway.
Why does this matter? It appears that all of the historical records agree that the first wife of Alan, Lord of Galloway, is the mother of Helen (Ellen), wife of Roger de Quincy, who is the oldest surviving child of Alan (and likely the oldest child altogether) and one of the three heiresses of Alan. So, identifying which of Alan's wives was the first wife becomes important in correctly identifying the mother and, thus, the family from which Helen (Ellen) descends. Was Helen (Ellen) a Lacy as some records, particularly private records, suggest, or was she a descendant of the Kings of Man as many historical records suggest? It is noted that a daughter (Affrica) of Fergus, Lord of Galloway (Alan's great grandfather) was married to one of the Kings of Man (Olaf), so there is clearly a long-standing connection between the Galloway family and the Kings of Man. In addition, Reginald, King of Man, called upon Alan, Lord of Galloway, in 1225, to assist him in a battle with Reginald's brother, Olaf, who was attempting to lay claim to the Kingdom of Man. Why would Alan come to the aid of Reginald? Because, he was previously Reginald's son-in-law.
It appears that the overwhelming majority of the historical records make Helen (Ellen) the daughter of the daughter of Ragnald (Reginald), King of Man, and the first wife of Alan, Lord of Galloway. And that seems to make some reasonable sense, since Alan is from Scotland (Galloway), not from England, so one might assume that his first marriage would be to a Scottish woman from a family that his family would have had contact with, rather than a family across the border at a time when England and Scotland were experiencing some difficulties. Later, when conditions improved between England and Scotland, Alan could well seek out wives across the border, and it is well known that by the time of King John and the signing of the Magna Charta in 1215, Alan, Lord of Galloway, was a supporter of King John against the revolting Barons, but that is many years after Alan's first marriages.
Based on the above information, it seems prudent to make Helen (Ellen) of Galloway the daughter of Alan, Lord of Galloway, by his first wife, the daughter of Ragnald, King of Man, since Alan's marriage to a Lacy did not occur until 25-30 years after the birth of Helen (Ellen) and thus Alan's Lacy wife simply could not have been the mother of Helen (Ellen).

Helen (also known as Ela or Elena) had two half-sisters and co-heiresses, Devorguilla (or 'Derborgaill', mother of King John of Scotland), and Christina (or 'Cairistiona'). Helen, eldest daughter and co-heiressof Alan, Lord of Galloway. Countess of Winchester. Without legitimatesons to succeed him, Alan's lands and dignities were divided between the husbands of his three daughters, so Roger acquired Alan's positionas Constable of Scotland, and one-third of the lordship of Galloway (although the actual title of Lord of Galloway went through Helen's half-sister Devorguilla to her husband John I de Balliol).
The three daughters of Roger and Helen of Galloway were:
Helen (also known as Ela or Elena), who married Alan Baron Zouche of Ashby;
Elizabeth (also known as Isabella) married Alexander Comyn, 2nd Earl of Buchan;
Margaret married William de Ferrers, 5th Earl of Derby (and was thus stepmother to her own stepmother).

ELLEN of Galloway ([before 1205]-after 21 Nov 1245, bur Brackley). The Annales Londonienses name "Eleyn countesse de Wynton" as eldest of the three daughters of "la primere fille Davi" and "Aleyn de Gavei", naming "Margarete countesse de Ferreres et Eleyne la Zusche et la countesse de Bougham" as her three daughters[1194]. It is assumed that she was not born from Alan’s marriage to Margaret of Huntingdon as her descendants did not raise a claim to the Scottish throne in 1291. This is consistent with the date of marriage of one of her daughters being estimated to [1238]. The identity of Ellen’s mother as her father’s first wife is confirmed by her husband Roger de Quincy holding Kippax (linked to Alan’s first wife as shown above)[1195]. Ellen’s birth and marriage dates are estimated from her daughter who married in [1238] having given birth soon after that marriage. The Liber Pluscardensis records that the eldest daughter of "Alanus de Galway filius Rotholandi de Galway" married "Rogerus de Quinci comes Wintoniæ"[1196]. "Elena quondam filia Alani de Galeweya" donated "villam de Edeluestune" to the church of Glasgow by undated charter[1197]. "Rogerus de Quency constabularius Scocie et Elena uxor eius filia quondam Alani de Galweya" recognised the rights of the church of Glasgow to "villam de Edeluestune" by undated charter[1198]. m ([before 1223]) as his first wife, ROGER de Quincy Earl of Winchester, son of SAHER de Quincy Earl of Winchester & Margaret of Leicester (-25 Apr 1264, maybe bur Brackley). He is named son-in-law of Alan of Galloway by Matthew Paris, who does not name his wife[1199] but says in a later passage that she was "primogenita soror"[1200]. He succeeded his father-in-law in 1234 as hereditary Constable of Scotland, de iure uxoris.
