=== Life Sketch ===
Simon de Joinville, born around 1175 and died in 1233, was lord of Sailly and then of Joinville at the beginning of the xiii century. He was the fourth son of Geoffroy IV and his wife Helvide de Dampierre. He succeeded his elder brother Geoffroy V when the latter died in the Holy Land during the fourth crusade and became in turn lord of Joinville until his death.
He married Ermengarde de Montclair, who gave him the seigneury of Montclair in the diocese of Trier, with whom he had three children. Shortly afterwards, he fought alongside the Duke of Lorraine Ferry II against the Count of Bar Thiébaut I.
He then took part in the Albigensian crusade and certainly fought at the sieges of Béziers and Carcassonne. Back in Champagne, he swore allegiance to the regent countess of Champagne Blanche de Navarre and her son, the future Thibaut IV of Champagne, in prevention against the next claims of his cousin Érard de Brienne, but finally rallied to the cause of the latter during the war of succession of Champagne. But he was defeated by the combined forces of the county of Champagne and the duchy of Burgundy and forced to submit.
Shortly afterwards, he decided to join the Fifth Crusade and took part in the siege of Damietta, where he met up with his cousin Jean de Brienne, now King of Jerusalem. Once the city fell, he returned to Joinville where his wife had died.
He then married Beatrix d'Auxonne, who brought him the castle of Marnay as a dowry. They were the parents of six other children.
Then, he accompanied Count Thibaut to Occitania in order to continue the Albigensian crusade where he participated in the siege of Avignon. But he stayed only forty days and left with his suzerain in his states.
A few years later, he supported the Count of Champagne against a league of powerful barons united against him. In retaliation, he went on a ride in the Barrois. Thereafter, he had to urgently gather his vassals in order to rescue the city of Troyes against the Count's enemies.
Simon de Joinville died in 1233 and was buried in the abbey of Clairvaux. He left his son and heir, Jean de Joinville, future chronicler of the life of Saint Louis, still a minor under the guardianship of his widow Béatrix d'Auxonne.
