Sir William le Vavasour of Hazlewood, (c. 1131-29 June 1191) was the 1st Lord of Hazlewood, a prominent judge, a powerful land owner in Yorkshire (Hazlewood Castle) and one of the witnesses to the Charters of Sawley Abbey. William was born in Yorkshire, England to a noble Norman family. His father Sir Mauger le Vavasour III was a prominent knight and his great-grandfather Sir Mauger le Vavasour was the door-keeper to William the Conqueror. William is the patriarch and founder of the Vavasour family.

William, born, say, 1131, married Maud (Matilda) Perry born in 1133. The marriage year may be estimated when he was 21, or, say, 1152.
1158 Witness to Charter
William witnessed a charter circa 1158-63

William was amerced in 1165-66, 1166-67 and 1175-76.
1166 Hazlewood and Other Holdings
In 1166 William succeeded to the property which had been held by his uncle, Robert Fitz Malger.
In 1166 William held 2 knights' fees of William de Percy, 1/3 knights' fee of Henry de Lacy and 1/2 knights' fee of the Honor of Skipton.
The first records of the house at Hazlewood are to be found in the Domesday Book, described as being owned and occupied by Sir Mauger the Vavasour (a vavasour is a type of feudal liegeman). Hazlewood was then inhabited by descendants of the Vavasours for over 900 years.

Keats-Rohan reports that William died in between 1189-91 leaving issue. Assuming his birth in, say, 1131 and marriage in, say, 1152, his children's births could be estimated as occurring in 1153 and 1155.

Robert's heirs were a daughter Matilda, wife successively of Theobald Walter and Fulk FitzWarin, by his first wife, and by his second wife, Juliana, daughter of Thomas of Multon, a son John who held in 1242 the Percy fee that William had held in 1166.
