Biography
Keats-Rohan has an entry called "de Bolebec, Hugo II Filius Walteri"
Son of Walter de Bolebec of Whitchurch, Buckinhamshire, succeeded his father c.1142. Founder of Woburn Abbey. He died in 1165 leaving a son Walter II (d.1190), then a minor in the custody of Hugh's brother Walter. After the death of Walter's daughter Isabel, countess of Oxford, without issue in 1206/7, the barony passed to Hugh's daughters Isabel and Constance, of whom Constance, wife of Elias de Beauchamp (d.1226/27), died without issue and was succeeded by her sister Isabel. Isabel (d.1245), was wife first of Henry de Nonant (d. 1206) and secondly of Robert de Vere, earl of Oxford (d.1221). Whitchurch descended with her issue by Robert de Vere.
He started appearing as an adult in charters while his father was also still active. For example:
1133/35. Cawley cites The Chronicon Rameseiensis which records the donations made by "Walterus de Bolebech…et Heileunis uxor sua et Hugo filius suus", dated to [1133/35]
1133/37. Keats-Rohan and Cawley cite a charter of Ramsey abbey dated to [1133/37] which records that "Walterus de Bolebeche…Heylenius uxor sua et Hugo filius suus" donated "terram de Waltone"
1134. Sanders and Cawley cite the Chronicon Rameseiensis recording the donations made by "Hugo de Bolebech filius Walteri", dated to 1134
1139/43. Probably it was Hugh, who appears in a royal charter in a similar period (Dec 1139-2 Feb 1141 or Dec 1142-Sept 1143).
1145. "Hugo de Bolebock" founded Woburn abbey, Bedfordshire, recorded in a charter dated 1145, and confirmed by a charter of King John dated 3 Jan [1200/01]
Round helps us understand what happened at his death:
Hugh was holding at his death a barony which owed the service of ten knight's fees, twenty knight's fees on the Giffard fief. The carta of Walter Bolebec (his younger brother), in 1166, alleges that the King restored to him (ei reddidit) the barony on the death of his brother Hugh, which conveys the misleading impression that he was Hugh's heir. We learn the truth, however, from the Pipe Roll of 1165, where we find him accounting for a hundred marcs for the wardship of his nephew (nepotis sui) with his land and for ten marcs (for scutage) from Hugh's fief. The sheriff also accounts for twenty marcs from (the issues of) Hugh's land since his death. In 1167 Walter finished paying off his debt to the Crown.
In 1168, Reginald de Curtenai, founder of the English house and now leaping into favour, has obtained the wardship. An entry on the Pipe Roll shows him charged with ten marcs " de militibus Walteri de Bolebec qui est in custodia ejus, de illis videlicet militibus quos tenet in capite de Rege ", while the roll of 1169 shows the twenty Bolebec fees on the Giffard fief also in his ward. Now this minor, clearly, cannot be the Walter who sent in the carta of 1166 and who had himself obtained the wardship in 1165. We thus secure our first point, namely that there were two Walters, who were uncle and nephew.
