=== Life Sketch ===
Theobald de Berkeley, a younger son of the Berkeleys of Berkeley, co. Gloucester, was the first of the name to appear in Scotland, and is said to have gone up into that kingdom about 1154, in which year Roger de Berkeley the then proprietor of the Manor (probably his elder brother) was evicted from his lands by King Henry II. for having espoused the cause of King Stephen, King Henry granting them, together with Berkeley Castle, to Robert Fitzhardinge* who died 1170-1, leaving issue.t Theobald de Berkeley seems to have been the father of three sons.

Theobald was reputedly the son of Humphrey de Albini of the Cotentin. This is relevant because of the later Cunningham connection to Warnebald a land baron also from the Cotentin who went to Northampton and was Steward of Simon de Senlis probably through his marriage to Maud de Lens who later became queen of Scots. There are many connections to Canmores, Plantagenets, Morvilles, Berkeleys, Peches, Houghtons, which tie all these North England barons to David I King of Scots. You won’t find extant details but scattered throughout various sources. For one thing, note how it was Grimbald who first held lands Bosiate, Moulton, Whissenden, etc and later went to Morvilles. This is simply through noble arranged marriages, knight’s service, etc all political measures. Not to mention it is a known fact that Hugh de Morville was one of King David’s best friends through life.
