=== Life Sketch ===
Biography
The Chronicle of Abingdon states that Richard was the son of Thurstan Basset. Keats-Rohan also names Thurstan as his father. His birth date and place are uncertain but his son, another Thurstan, was old enough in 1176/7 to be mentioned alongside him in a Pipe Roll entry for Bedfordshire. and that suggests Richard was likely to have been born before 1145. His father held lands in Wallingford, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire.
The Red Book of the Exchequer records Richard Basset paying scutage for lands in Northamptonshire in 1190/1 and 1194/5 and as holding lands in Northamptonshire and Leicestershire in 1210-12. If this is the same Richard, it points to a death date of after 1210.
The name of Richard's wife is not known.
Research Notes
Wife
Beatrice de Harcourt has previously been shown as having two Basset husbands on WikiTree, this Richard and a Robert Basset. Her husband was actually a Robert Basset: her brother Ivo granted land in Wolvey, Warwickshire to a Robert Basset on Robert's marriage to Ivo's sister Beatrice.
Mother
Matilda Ridel has in the past been shown as Richard's mother. There is no good source for this, and she was not the wife of his father.
Death
Keats-Rohan states that Richard died in 1176. She may be assuming that the Pipe Rolls entry for 1176/7 referred to above indicates that Richard was then dead: if so, that interpretation looks debatable. The wording is "Ricardus Basset et Turstinus filius eius reddt. comp. de .lx. m. de eadem misericordia. In perdona per breve regis Turstino Basset .Ix. m." and that would not appear to give a clear indication that Richard was deceased, though it does suggest that the authorities dealt with Thurstan on behalf of both Thurstan and his father.
It is possible that the 1210-12 Red Book of the Exchequer entry cited in Medlands refers to a different Richard Basset: if it does, the Richard of this profile may have died earlier.
