=== Life Sketch ===
Uchtred, Lord of Galloway
Name variations: Uhtred, Uchtred, Uctredus, Huctred, Ochtredus, Uchtred FitzFergus, Uhtred MacFergus
Uchtred was the son of Fergus of Galloway. It is believed his mother was one of the illegitimate daughters of Henry I of England, the most common consensus being Elizabeth FitzRoy.
Uchtred married Gunhilda of Dunbar, daughter of Waltheof of Allerdale. They were the parents of:
- Lochlann (also known by his French name Roland)
- Eve of Galloway, wife of Walter de Berkeley (Chamberlain of Scotland)
- Christina, wife of William de Brus, 3rd Lord of Annandale
- a second son (name unknown) killed in battle in 1185.
As a child Uchtred was fostered by the King of Scotland, a hostage to assure his fathers continued good behavior. Fergus was allied with King Henry I and married to his daughter so was of course more supportive of the English king than that of Scotland. Although a grandson of English King Henry I, Uchtred was more inclined toward the practices and policies of the Scottish king because he grew up among them. This was a major bone of contention later on with his brother Gille, who opposed many of the Scottish practices, such as encouraging Norman settlers.
After the death of Fergus, Uchtred and his brother Gille Brigte were given joint rule of Galloway. Uchtred was a strong supporter of King William I of Scotland. In 1174 both brothers participared in William's invasion of Northumberland. When King William was captured, the Galwegians under Gille Brigte rebelled, taking the opportunity to slaughter the Norman and English settlers in their land. Uchtred opposed these actions. In retaliation, later that year, Gille Brigte and his son Máel Coluim captured Uchtred. Uchtred was brutally mutilated, they cut out his tongue, he was blinded, castrated, and killed by his brother. Gille Brigte then took control of all of Galloway.
King William of Scotland and King Henry of England (who was Uchtred's cousin) fined Gille 1000 marks and Henry took Gille's son Donnchad as hostage to ensure Gille's future good behavior. Gille Brigte was at war with King William when he died in 1185. William installed Uchtred's son Lochlan as Lord of Galloway.

Uchtred mac Fergusa (c. 1120 - September 22, 1174) was Lord of Galloway from 1161 to 1174, ruling jointly with his half-brother Gille Brigte (Gilbert). They were sons of Fergus of Galloway; their mothers' names are unknown, but Uchtred may have been born to one of the many illegitimate daughters of Henry I of England.
As a boy he was sent as a hostage to the court of King Máel Coluim IV of Scotland. When his father, Prince Fergus, died in 1161, Uchtred was made co-ruler of Galloway along with Gilla Brigte. They participated in the disastrous invasion of Northumberland under William I of Scotland in 1174. King William was captured, and the Galwegians rebelled, taking the opportunity to slaughter the Norman and Saxon settlers in their land. During this time Uchtred was brutally mutilated, blinded, castrated, and killed by his brother Gille Brigte and Gille Brigte's son, Máel Coluim. Gille Brigte then seized control of Galloway entire.
Uchtred had married Gunhilda of Dunbar, and they were the parents of Lochlann and Eve of Galloway, wife of Walter de Berkeley.

If this is correct, Fergus was not the same person as the unnamed brother who was killed in 1185, as Roland is named in the document as constable, an appointment which he assumed after the death of William de Morville in 1196.]
Douglas Richardson (12 Sep 2002) cites medieval genealogist of Scotland Andrew MacEwan to posit that Uchtred was father to a daughter Eve or Eva of Galloway who married Walter de Berkeley, Chamberlain of Scotland (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/soc.genealogy.medieval/pRsI83h9TNk):
Uchtred Fitz Fergus, lord of Galloway, had two known children, Roland (who you show) and Eve, wife of Walter de Berkeley, of Red Castle, co. Forfar, chamberlain of Scotland. Eve's identification was made in recent time by the great Scottish scholar, Andrew MacEwen, of Stockton Springs, Maine. Andrew plans to write an article in the near future detailing this important discovery. The Percy family of England descends from Eve, wife of Walter de Berkeley.

=== Notes and sources for Uchtred... ===
Uchtred was usually described as 'Uchtred, son of Fergus' as he was not lord of the whole of Galloway, but shared the province with his brother Gilbert. He appears as a witness to royal charters both before and after the death of his father who was obliged to send him to the Scottish court as a hostage after the insurrection was surpressed. Uchtred was also a benefator of the church and founded the nunnery at Lincluden and gifted various churches to Holyrood and Homcultram abbeys.(1) He also granted some land in Troqueer to the hospital of St. Peter of York c.1160.(2)
Uchtred remained a peaceful subject until 1174 when he and his followers when with King William on his march into England. The capture of King William tempted Uchtred and Gilbert to make a break for independence. Upon their return home they expelled the King's officers from their territories and slew all foreigners without mercy, seized all the royal castles and then petitioned the King of England that he would 'take them from the authority of the King of Scots, and govern them himself'. But the brothers quarrelled and Gilbert and his son Malcolm attacked Uchtred on 22 Sept. 1174 where he was mutilated, blinded, castrated and murdered at his house on Loch Fergus.(3)

Uchtredus Filius Scoti, the founder of the ancient family of Scott, was witness to the foundation charters of the abbeys of Holyrood House and Selkirk, by David II, in the years 1128 and 1130. It does not appear, however, that this person assumed the name of Scot as a surname, but htat he was designated 'filius Scoti,' as a son of a Scotsman, to distinguish him from other persons called Uchtred, which was then a common Christian name beyond the Tweed. Publication: Name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uhtred_of_Galloway;
Note: Uchtred mac Fergus (c. 1120 – 22 September 1174) was Lord of Galloway from 1161 to 1174, ruling jointly with his half-brother Gille Brigte (Gilbert). They were sons of Fergus of Galloway; their mothers' names are unknown, but Uchtred may have been born to one of the many illegitimate daughters of Henry I of England, most likely Elizabeth Fitzroy.
Career
As a boy he was sent as a hostage to the court of King Malcolm IV of Scotland. When his father, Prince Fergus, died in 1161, Uchtred was made co-ruler of Galloway along with Gilla Brigte. They participated in the disastrous invasion of Northumberland under William I of Scotland in 1174. King William was captured, and the Galwegians rebelled, taking the opportunity to slaughter the Normans and English in their land. During this time Uchtred was brutally mutilated, blinded, castrated, and killed by his brother Gille Brigte and Gille Brigte's son, Máel Coluim. Gille Brigte then seized control of the whole of Galloway.
Marriage and children
Uchtred had married Gunhilda of Dunbar, daughter of Waltheof of Allerdale and they were the parents of Lochlann of Galloway (also known as Roland), Eve of Galloway, wife of Walter de Berkeley and Christina, wife of William de Brus, 3rd Lord of Annandale.
