Subject: Corrections to "Complete Peerage": Fitz Alan (of Oswestry)
Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 21:20:54 +0000 (UTC)
Mr. Phillips,
Thank you for the wonderful work you do on posting corrections to the Complete Peerage. It is nice to see a summary of the extensive discussion regarding Fitz Alan origins.
One other footnote to this discussion is the information provided by Janet Meisel in "Barons of the Welsh Frontier: The Corbet, Pantulf, and Fitz Warin Families, 1066-1272" (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1980), p. 28:
"Hugh Pantulf was a very active and highly visible baron of Wem. To a large extent, Hugh's importance appears to be tied to the fact that in 1170 he married Christiana Fitz Alan, the daughter of William Fitz Alan I (who was probably the most powerful baron in Shropshire before his death in 1160)."
Hugh Pantulf & Christiana Fitz Alan are ancestors of Corbet, Boteler, Le Strange, Talbot, Radcliffe, Stafford, and other notable families.
Hal Bradley
______________________________
Keats-Rohan [Domesday People p.860] says that by his first wife William had a daughter Christiana, the wife of Hugh Pantulf of Wem, d.1224 [Cart Shrewsbury, 297]. Hugh is mentioned on p.1059 as the son and successor of Ivo Pantulf, who succeeded his father c.1137/38 and died in 1175. Nothing very definite, and perhaps more information could be gleaned from an account of the Pantulfs (Eyton again?), but if Christiana were of an age with her husband, it suggests she might have been born closer to 1150 than to 1130.
