Update on Parents of Roger FitzRichard:

Biography
NOTE ON PARENTS:
FitzEustace-1 has been removed as father. J.H. Round showed in the 19th century that it was impossible for the father of this Roger to be the same Richard who was a son of Eustace. (It would mean an extremely close cousin marriage.)
Roger's father will almost certainly have been named Richard. As a second name, one guess might be Candlet (a placename in Suffolk), because Keats-Rohan says Roger had an uncle Thomas de Candelent.
It has been proposed since Round that the mother of Roger MIGHT be a Bigod, but it is not clear that there has been any serious proposal that we know her name or exact position in the Bigod family tree.
--- The following old notes await future pruning...
Sanders, writing about Roger, and having mentioned that the king granted the honour of Whalton to him, wrote:
Henry II granted Warkworth to Roger fitz Richard father of Robert fitz Roger, for the service of 1 knight in 1157; this grant was confirmed for Robert fitz Roger in 1199. Robert was granted Newburn for the service of 1 knight's fee. In the thirteenth century scutage was paid on 3 knights' feesfor these three places [Whalton, Warkworth, Newburn]. Sometimes Warkworth and Newburn were called baronies.
On John de Lacy - claimed to be bro of Roger FitzRichard, see Round, whose "Who was Alice de Vere?" Trans Essex Arch Soc n.s. vol 3, 243-51 (1885-89) & his _Geoffrey of Mandeville_ make case for her 2 marriages (1) to Robert de Essex - but not Robert fa of Henry of Essex, but rather, another by that name & (2) Roger FitzRichard - but leaves the John de Lacy case to be decided. ("...It is clear that Roger FitzRichard cannot have been brother, as alleged, to John 'de Laci,' and that his origin must be sought elsewhere" (248) - i.e. elsewhere than as s. of Richard FitzEustace.
CP XII, pt 2 (1959), 274n ('Vescy' - giving geneal. of Payn FitzJohn & his bro. Eustace FitzJohn) accepts that while Eustace FitzJohn is fa. of Richard FitzEustace & that the latter is fa. of John, Constable of Chester (John having succeeded Richard's stepfather): 'That Richard FitzEustace was the father of Roger FitzRichard, lord of Warkworth, 2nd husband of Alice de Vere, was proved to be a fallacy by Round in Essex Arch Soc, Trans, N.S. III, p 248".
Note that the CP XII 268-85 pedigree giving Eustace FitzJohn->Richard FitzEustace & Aubreye de Lisours ->John, constable of Chester ->"second line of Lascy" is accepted in _Early Yorkshire Families_ (Yorks Arch Rec Ser. vol 135, pp 99-100 & chart fac. p. 99), in 1973 - but without giving Richard a son Roger etc (i.e. without the Warkworth line).
Note that EYC II, chart 199, gives 'Richard FitzEustace', & indeed adds "d. ante 1163"; Wightman (1966) gives next to 'Robert FitzEustace' "ob. 1163"). While EYC's phrase can be taken as merely extremely vague, I'm inclined to read Clay as referring to the same person to whom Wightman refers and not two FitzEustaces, Robt & Rich. The connection to the FitzEustace of the Wark line may not be proved? More to be done.<

----------------------------------
Roger fitz Richard, Lord of Warkworth and Clavering, was a prominent 12th-century noble. He was a son of Richard fitz Eustace and Albreda de Lisours. Life Roger was a son of Richard fitz Eustace and Albreda de Lisours. Roger was the constable of Newcastle Castle, Newcastle upon Tyne and received by gift of King Henry II of England, the manor of Warkworth, Northumberland in 1157. John fitz Richard his brother was the Constable of Chester and another brother, Robert fitz Richard, was the prior of the Knights Hospitaller in England. During 1163, he was given the manor of Clavering, Essex and the hand of Alice de Vere, after the forfeiture and taking of the habit of Henry of Essex. In 1174, during King William I of Scotland's raid into Northumberland, Roger's castle of Warkworth was destroyed and Newcastle Castle was reinforced with troops, so that the King of Scotland did not attempt to siege the castle. Family Roger married Adelisa (Alice), former wife of Henry de Essex, a daughter of Aubrey de Vere and Alice de Clare,
they had the following known issue:
1. Robert of Warkworth and Clavering, married Margery de Chesney; had issue.

ROGER FitzRichard Lord of Warkworth (-before 1185). m as her second husband, ADELISA de Vere, widow of ROBERT de Essex, daughter of AUBREY de Vere Lord of Hedingham & his wife Adelisa de Clare ([1105]-after 1185). Leland quotes a Vere manuscript which names "Albericus de Ver pater meus…Adeliza filia Gilberti de Clare" and "Adeliza de Estsexa, filia Alberici Ver et Adelizæ" who married "Rogerus filius Richardi, nepos comitis Hugonis Bigot"[127]. “Roesia comitissa” donated property to Colne priory, for the souls of “patris mei Alberici et Gaufridi domini mei”, by undated charter, witnessed by “…Willielmo de Veer, Adelisa de Veer, Adelisa de Essexa”[128]. The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records property “Arenho” held by “Alicia de Essex…lx annorum…amita comitis Willelmi et soror comitis Albrici”, adding that she had “ii filios milites et i filiam maritatam Johanni Constabulario Cestrie”[129]. The same source, in another passage, records that “Alicia de Essex…est iiii.xx annorum” (presumably indicating "4 x 20 years" i.e. 80, which appears to be a more accurate assessment than the statement in the earlier passage that she was 60 years old, given the general chronology of these families) and held “Clavering sicut dotem suam, de feodo Henrici de Essex”, adding that she had “ii filios milites" and land "in comitatu Norhamton…de feodo comitis Willelmi"[130]. Roger & his wife had [six] children:

Bootle was certainly made a portion of the Bussels' fee of Penwortham. Warin Bussel, under Roger of Poitou, may have held Bootle before 1100. Of the barons of Penwortham it was held by Roger son of Ravenkil, and descended to his son Richard, lord of Woodplumpton and founder of Lytham Priory. Two only of Richard's five daughters left issue-Maud, wife of Sir Robert de Stock and Amuria, wife of Thomas de Beetham; and their heirs continued to hold it down to the time of Edward II.
The inquisition held in 1249,after the death of Thomas de Beetham showed that he held 8 oxgangs of land in Bootle of the earl of Lincoln, rendering 12s. yearly, and 2 by knight's service from which he took nothing. In 1242-1243, Thomas de Beetham and Robert de Stockport were said to hold the fourth part of a knight's fee here. [Lancs. Inq. and Extents, Rec. Soc. Lancs. and Ches., 149, 171].

____________________
Roger Filius Richardi de Wrkewrthe, a 'nepos' of Earl Hugh Bigod, according to his brother-in-law William de Vere in his Miracles of St Osyth. This description may indicate that his father Richard married an otherwise unknown daughter of Roger Bigod, though it is equally possible that the lady in question was a sister or niece of Roger Bigod. The only other hint as to his family comes from the same source, where he is given an uncle Thomas de Candelent; see C Clay, 'The ancestry of the early lords of Warkworth', Archaeologia Aeliana, 4th ser. 32 (1954), 65-71. Clay suggested we read 'Candelent' as Canteloup, the name of a family later found in the area; cf Walter de Canteloup, one of the two persons holding in 1166 from de Mandeville the Domesday fief of Germund de St Ouen. However, 'Candelent' is the Latin form found in Domesday for the manor of Candlet in Suffolk, which the Englishman Norman the Sheriff held of Roger Bigod in 1086. Roger's charter for Rochester made a grant for Norman's soul as Roger and his wife's predecessor in manors they were granting. Could it be that a family link had been forged between the Bigods and the issue of Norman? Roger fitz Roger was granted Warkworth in Northumberland in 1157 by Henry II; he returned a Carta for one fee held in chief in 1166. His wife was Adelisa, daughter of Alberic II de Ver, previously wife of Robert of Essex, probably a brother of Henry of Essex. Father of Robert fitz Roger, who acquired the barony of Whalton, Northumberland, a second son, and Alice, wife of John, constable of Chester. [Domesday Descendants p948]
