  Ragg writes:
  
  The various spellings of the name are Eldred, Eldreth, Eltred, Eltreth, Elred, and Heltred, besides Elftred which I have adopted simply because that is the earliest form in which I have found it in an original document.
  
  No surname is recorded for him. Note also that concerning placenames that people might name him after, Workington and Culwen for example came into the family several generations later.

  Eldred is best known as father of Ketel fitz Eldred. Ragg believed he would have been in his prime at around the time of the conquest in 1066. As he does not appear in any of the stories of men coming into new power in this period, Ragg proposes that he is from an old Anglo Saxon family. He found evidence to show that probably his family and many others in Cumbria had originally held lands further south but had migrated away from those areas as the Norman domination spread. (Many also ended up in the kingdom of Scotland.)

  Of Eldred, or Eltred, nothing seems to be known. The local histories which make him the son of Ivo Taillebois are here quite untrustworthy. We know that Ivo had only one child, Lucia (see Appendix A, on Ranulf Menschen--Registers of Wetheral Priory).
