Notes for Matthew de Hyde: The Hyde's of Denton The township of Hyde in modern Tameside bears local name of one of its oldest and most distinguished families. It began with one Matthew de Hyde (or Mathaeus de Hide) whose son Robert acquired the title Robert de Norbury from King Edward II, as well as Lordship of the Manors of Hyde and Newton in Chester, Shalcross in Derbyshire and of Halghton in Lancashire. The family is related by ancestry to the Hyde's of Wiltshire at Tisbury and West Hatch and to Edward Hyde, the Earl of Clarendon. The Hyde's (or Hides) held estates at one time comprised of one hundred and ninety one acres. Their county seat was at Hyde Hall, a sixteenth century building, much altered in subsequent centuries by brick face work. Probably the most famous member of the Hyde family was Anne, wife to King James II and mother of Queen Anne. Omerod's History of Cheshire quotes 'that about the time of King John, one moiety of the township of HYDE was vested in a family which bore the local name and was then represented by Matthew de Hyde'. This Matthew had a son, Sir Robert Hyde, knt. Lord of the manors of Hyde and Newton in Cheshire; of Shalcross in Derbyshire; and of Halghton in the county of Lancashire, who married the cousin and heiress of Thomas de Norbury, by whom he acquired the lordship of Norbury, Cheshire. Descended from these Hyde's are those in Wiltshire at Tisbury and West Hatch and also Edward Hyde; Earl of Clarendon. The book "Kin of Mellcine Thurman Smith" mentions the following on the early Hyde families: Coat of Arms for Hyde: Azure, a chevron between three lozenges or. Crest: An eagle, wings endorsed sable, beaked and membered or. (This crest is given for Hyde in Welles and Allied Families, p. 22, published 1927 by the Am. Hist. Society, Inc., and also in the Harleian Soc. Pub., Visitation of Cheshire, Vol. 18, p. 131. ) In Ormerod's History of Cheshire, Vol. 3, p. 394, the following is given: Crest: On a wreath a crow, with wings elevated, proper. This is illustrated not colored in Ormerod. The coat and crest as given in the Welles Family Hist. is colored. The family name of Hyde is derived from one of the six Hyde parishes of England, and these originally derived their names from location "at the hide," a plot of about 120 acres of land. John de la Hyde is recorded in the Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire, 1273 A. D., and Adam Atte Hyde in the writs of Parliament, 1300 A. D. There are several titled families of the name in England, but the highest are now extinct. The Hyde's of Norbury and Hyde, County Chester, whose arms are described above, descended from Sir Robert Hyde, living in the reign of Henry III (1216-1272). Hyde Hall (generally called Hyde Mill, from an ancient mill near the mansion) is the residence of the manorial proprietor, and was new-cased with brick by the late possessor, in his father's lifetime. A considerable portion of the former fabric is preserved in the interior; and from the arms of Hyde, with several quarterings (Impaling Brooke) appearing in the carved wainscoting of one of the apartments, it is probable that the hall was rebuilt about the time of the Restoration. (When Charles II came to the throne, 1662, following Cromwell. E. E. W. ) It is situated on low ground, near the Thames River, on the verge of the, and of late years the increase of collieries and manufactories in the neighborhood has added more materially to the value of the land than to the picturesque appearance or actual comfort of the surrounding district. A court is held regularly for the Manor. The ancestry for the Hyde's of Norbury is compiled from the book "Kin Of Mellcene Thurman Smith" and is taken from "Omerod's History of Cheshire Vol. 3, pp. 393-395" and "Burkes Landed Gentry Vol. 3 p. 2759-2760". The author states that "This lineage does not agree with that given for Hyde's of Norbury in Ormerod's Hist. of Cheshire, Vol. 3, pp. 393-5, but the differences are not great and can be worked out. The last five generations are the same. " The following is the Burkes ancestry of the Hyde family.
