=== Life Sketch ===
William "pater originalis" le Belward
Born about 1140 in Malpas, Cheshire, England
Son of Nigel de Puis and Agnes de Malpas
Brother of Robert FitzNigel
Husband of Unknown (ferch Rafe) Belward
Father of David Malpas, Robert (Calmundelei) de Cholmondeley and Richard FitzWilliam
Died in Malpas, Cheshire, England
1140 Birth and Parents
Peter Cotgreave suggests the possibility, based on a coincidence of names in extant documents, that William may be a son of Nigel de Puis and Agnes de Malpas. Cotgreave suggests that Agnes herself was a daughter of Letitia de Malpas and her husband Richard [1] These relationships have been linked, but labelled "uncertain."
Ormerod and other writers who incorrectly assumed that William le Belward was the son in law of Robert FitzHugh place William le Belward as much as a century earlier. [Wikitree]

=== Egerton Family References in the Harlei ===
Egerton Family References in the Harleian Manuscripts Briefly, the manuscripts are the records of the "Visitations" (the investigation of heralds) of English and Welsh families. The manuscripts were complied from about 1530 to the close of the 17th century. Over 30,000 families registered their lineage which are now housed in the British Museum in London. The Egerton family name was recorded in the following counties, which can be used as a starting point for further investigation into these records held in the British Museum.
