=== Life Sketch ===
Orme de Davenport, the ancestor of the Davenports, assumed the local name Davenport, and the manorial history of the present time gives the date assigned to Orme de Davenport as 20 of William I, which would be 1086. This is proved by four pedigrees in the British Museum. He was a witness to a charter of enfranchisement by Gilbert de Venables during the reign of either King William II or King Henry I

According to Ormerod, Vol.3 p.68:- Witness to a charter of enfranchisment by Gilbert de Venables in time of William II or Henry I. This implies a date about 1100 which would mean Ormus (orme) was very young. Ormerod and others suggest a range of alternatives for his surname : Dauenport,de Aunceport etc.

=== Orme de Davenport assumed the local nam ===
Orme de Davenport assumed the local name of Davenport when the village was granted to him by Gilbert Venables, who had received a grant of it from William, the Conqueror, in 1086. He was witness to a charter of enfranchisement by Gilbert Venables in the time of William II (called Rufus, the Red) and Henry I, both sons of the Conqueror. The manorial history of the present township of Davenport, in Cheshire, involves a subject of rare occurrence even in Cheshire, the descent of a family in the male line from the Norman Conquest of the Palatinate, possessing at the present day the feudal powers which the local sovereign of that Palatinate invested it. And preserving its own archives, in a series of original documents, the proof of its ancient importance and its unbroken descent.
=== Davenport, of Davenport, co. Chester, de ===
Davenport, of Davenport, co. Chester, descended from Ormus de Davenport, temp. Conquest. The direct male line became extinct in 1577, when Davenport passed, in marriage, with Elizabeth, elder dau. and co-heir of John Davenport, Esq., to Robert Davies, Esq., of Manley. The blazon -- argent, a chevron between three crosses crosslet fitchée sable; the crest -- a man's head, couped at the shoulders and side head, ppr. with a rope round the neck, or. This singular crest is supposed to have been borne on the helmets of the Master Sergeants in their perambulations through the Peke Hills and the forests of Leek and Macclesfield, to the terror of the numerous gangs of banditti which infested in former times those wild districts. There is in the possession of the Capesthorne family a long and very ancient roll, containing the names of the master robbers who were taken and beheaded in the times of Koran, Roger, and Thomas de Davenport, and of their companions. === Family Information ===
Orme de Davenport appears to have been born in the 20tli year of William the Conqueror, 1086, and must have been fifty years old at the birth of his son Richard, who married Amabilia, daughter of the second Gilbert Venables, the Norman grantee of Davenport, before 1086.
