William de Harcourt, Seigneur of Harcourt, son and heir of Robert the Strong, witnessed with his father in 1113 as noted above. He fought for Henry I in 1124 against the Norman adherents of the king's nephew William Clito; and in 1130 was heir of the Leicestershire land of Robert his brother. At an undetermined date after 1141 William, son of Philip de Briouze, confirmed his grandfather's gift of the chapel of Briouze to the Abbey of St Florent de Samur; the document was attested by the brothers William de Harcourt and Philip, Bishop of Bayeux. Bishop Philip's charter of 1154, giving the chruch and vill of Sompting to the Templars, was assented to by his cousin William de Briouze and his brother William de Harcourt, the latter being designated in a subsequent confirmation as tunc eiusdem ecclesia advocato.
The wife of William de Harcourt was identified by La Roque as Hue d'Amboise, and their son, Robert de Harcourt the Younger, who lived during the reign of King Henry II, is a well proven ancestor of the French Counts of Harcourt. [NEHGR "The Early Harcourts"; Lundie W. Barlow, CXVI:93]
