=== Life Sketch ===
Arnould I er, Lord of Tornehen, Count of Guines (- 1169). Son of Wenemar, lord of Ghent, Lord and Gisèle Bornhem or Gilette, sister of Manasses I st of Guines.
«b»Biography «/b»
The usurper of the county of Guines, he became legitimate heir after the death of Beatrix de Bourbourg.
The death of Manasses gave birth to a long war between Beatrix de Bourbourg, granddaughter and heiress of Manasses, wife of an English nobleman, named Albert the Boar, and Arnoul of Ghent, son of Wenemar, lord of the city of that name, and Gisele, sister of Manasses. Arnoul upheld his pretensions in spite of the orders of Count Thierry d'Alsace, who punished him by confiscating, after the death of Wenemar, the Chatellenie of Ghent, which he gave to the chatelain of Kortrijk. Arnoul persisted in his enterprise, however, which he managed to bring to a successful conclusion. Seconded by the lord of Saint-Omer, his father-in-law, by Arnoul, viscount of Mark, Baudouin d'Ardres, etc., while the Boar was recalled to England, he seized Audruicq and vigorously pressed a fortress which his adversary had had built at Aumerval. Baldwin d'Ardres abandoned him after having married Beatrix, whom they had separated from her first husband; but this lady died and Arnoul of Ghent, after five years of fighting, remained possessor of the county of Guines, in 1144 .
He had, too, a competitor, Geoffrey III, lord Semur en Brionnais, which claimed that county as son of Alix, sister of Manasses I st of Guines, including Gisele or Gilette, mother of Arnould, was than younger sister. But Alix had been dead for a long time, while Arnould's mother was still alive; which gave the exclusion to Geofroi, the representation not taking place in the country. Geofroi did not contest.
Lambert d'Ardres describes Arnould as a very valiant knight among all the knights of his time .
He was the benefactor of many churches.
He abolished tolls and taxes for travelers on his land.
He went to England, where he died of illness in Newington where he died in 1169. His body was brought back to the hospital of Saint-Inglevert to which he had bequeathed his weapons, horses, dogs and hunting birds.
«b»Marriage and children «/b»
