=== Life Sketch ===
«b»Biography
Name«/b»
Sir Mauger (I) le Vavasour, of Barnby.
The word Vavasour means a vassal, or under-tenant so it may be assumed the title was acquired by Malger after the Conquest.
«b»1084 Birth«/b»
Malger is named by Keats-Rohan as the son of Malger, who is named in Domesday, the (likely younger) brother of Robert FitzMalger, and the father of Willelm.
Weber estimates a birth year of 1084 for Mauger Vavasour (II), son of Mauger Vavasour (I) and gives a birthplace of Barnby-upon-Don, Doncaster, in Yorkshire.
«b»1086 Domesday«/b»
Cokayne reports that the family of Vavasour of Hazlewood, parish of Tadcaster, descends from Mauger (I), tenant in Yorkshire of both William de Percy and Ilbert de Lacy in 1086. Mauger (I) was tenant of William de Percy at Barnby-upon-Don, Cocksford, Edlington, Hazlewood and Stutton, while he held Hessle, parish of Wragby, of Ilbert de Lacy. The first records of the house at Hazlewood are to be found in the Domesday Book, described as being owned and occupied by Sir Mauger the Vavasour (a vavasour is a type of feudal liegeman). Hazlewood was then inhabited by descendants of the Vavasours for over 900 years.
Mauger (II), the son, if born 1084, would have been aged 2 at the time of Domesday; his older brother Robert Fitz Mauger would have been aged 4 if born in 1082.
At an uncertain date during the time of Henry I (reigned 1100-1135), a witness to a charter of Alan de Percy was named Mauger. There is no proof that this Mauger was the same person as the tenant in 1086 and he may have been a son.
«b»Death«/b»
Mauger died after 1086 in Barnby-upon-Don, Doncaster, West Riding, Yorkshire, England.
Weber reports that Mauger (II) died in 1135 in Edlington, Doncaster, West Riding, Yorkshire, England.
Mauger's death in 1135 left Robert as the surviving son. However, when Robert died in 1166, Robert's heir was Mauger's son William.
«b»Issue
He had at least two children:«/b»
1.) Robert also known as Robert Filius Malgeri. Apparently Malger or Mauger's heir and therefore presumably the elder of the two sons. Born, say, 1082
2.) Mauger (II) le Vavasour. Son of Malger and probably the father of William, nephew and heir of Robert. Born, say, 1084. Weber refers to this Mauger, like his father, as Sir Mauger II le Vavasour, of Barnby, b: 1084 in Barnby-upon-Don, Doncaster, West Riding, Yorkshire, England.
While many writers report a third Mauger as the son of the second, Keats-Rohan shows Mauger (II) as the father only of Willelm.
Willliam le Vavasour was probably son of Robert's brother Mauger. Served Henry II as a justice. He died 1189/91 leaving issue Robert and Mauger. He would have been born before his father's death in 1135. If his father was born in 1084, his father would have been aged 21 in 1105 and could have married then, with William born as early as 1106. He succeeded to his uncle Robert's properties in 1166, but even if born in 1135, the year his father died, would have been aged 31 in 1166.
