ROBERT FitzSwein, son of SWEIN FitzRobert & his wife --- (-after 1130).
A manuscript recording the priors of Prittlewell quotes a charter under which “Robertus filius Sueni” founded Prittlewell priory, for the souls of “…aviæ meæ Beatricis”, witnessed by “Alberico de Ver et Roberto fratre eius…”[290].
A charter dated 1121 confirmed the possessions of Lewes Priory. “Rob Waster” donated "duos partes totius decimæ meæ de Wereslai" to St Neot’s, Huntingdonshire, for the soul of “Soeni de Essessa” and for the health of "domini mei Roberti filii prædicti Soeni…Gunnor uxoris suæ…uxoris meæ et Willielmi filii Gerei patris sui", by undated charter[292].
The 1130 Pipe Roll records "Robt fil Sueini" in Wiltshire[293]. The Red Book of the Exchequer refers to "Roberto filio Swein xl s" in Northamptonshire in [1158/59][294]. Lord of Rayleigh, Essex.
m as her first husband, GUNNOR Bigod, daughter of ROGER Bigod of Earsham, Suffolk & his [second] wife Adelise de Tosny (-before [1137]).
A charter of Hugh Bigod for Norwich Priory refers to property given by “his sister Gunnor”[295].
“Robert de Essex and Gunnora his wife, daughter of Roger Bigod” donated Fremingham church to Thetford priory, Norfolk for the souls of their ancestors and of "their son Henry on his birth-day"[296].
It is not clear from this extract whether Gunnor’s father was named in the original document. Her first marriage is indicated by the charter of King Henry II which confirmed donations to Thetford Priory, including the donation by “Gunnoræ matris Henrici de Exessa”[297].
She married secondly as his first wife, Hamon de Saint-Clair. Her second husband confirmed grants of her marriage portion in Brome for her soul [299].

Sources: Norr, p25; A. Roots 246; Magna Charta Sureties 156-1 Norr: Robert of Essex, otherwise Robert FitzSuen, born about 1089. Sureties: Robert of Essex, Lord of Rayleigh. SOURCES: 1. Ancestral File (AFN:8XJV-TQ). Alice de Vere, to whom her father, Aubrey II, gave as marriage portionland at Alice de Vere married, firstly, as his second wife, Robert de Essex, lordof of Rayleigh, for whose soul and the souls of her father and her brotherRobert de Vere she gave land at Ugley to the Order of the Hospital. As a widow,Alice continued to be styled Alice de Essex, perhaps because her first husbandwas a much bigger man than her second, or because her 2nd husband had nosurname, being always known as son of Richard. By his first wife, Gunnor Bigod, Robert was father of Henry de Essex,whose daughter Agnes married, as his third wife, the 1st Earl of Oxford. Asthe Lord of Rayleigh had already been married, Round assumed that Alice was hissecond wife; but subsequently he abandoned this conclusion, in the belief that Robert's undoubted wife, Gunnor Bigod, survived her husband, andsuggested that Alice's husband was an otherwise unknown son of that Robert and brotherof Henry de Essex. However, eventually he reverted to his original theory. Probably he came to the conclusion that Gunnor de Essex, who occurs in connection with Binham, was not Robert's wife, but an otherwise unknown daughter, as suggested (for chronological reasons) by Miss Fry. Dr.Farrer makes Alice the wife of Robert de Essex in one passage, of Henry de Essexin another. SOURCES: 1. Cokayne, G.E. _The Complete Peerage_. London: The St. CatherinePress, 1945; Volume X, Appendix J, pp. 115-116. 2. Ancestral File (AFN:8XJV-TQ). Gives his name as Henry de Essex,his date of birth as "abt 1090", and his place of birth as "of EssexEngland".

=== name ===
Name: this is a rare example of a matronymic, as discussed by Keats-Rohan in the introduction to Domesday People (p. 19). Apparently, J. H. Round originally pointed out that "Wimarc" was a woman (as stated explicitly by William of Poitiers), but suggested that her name indicated she was a Breton (in "Feudal England", pp. 256, 257). But Keats-Rohan points to statements by Vita AEdwardi Regis that Robert was a kinsman of Edward the Confessor, and by William of Poitiers that he was related to William the Conqueror. She suggests that as he was identified by his mother, she "was surely a high-born Norman", related to the ducal house.
Ancestry: Cite references from charters of the abbey of Montivilliers, near Le Havre, which mention a nun Vuimardis/Wimardis, widow of Ansfrid the steward, and her apparent son Robert de Moyaux (Calvados, cant. Lisieux-1, who gave land formerly held by Ansfrid.
Resident: Before 1066 THEYDON MOUNT was held by Godric as a manor and as 3 hides and 80 acres. After the Conquest it was given by William I to Robert Fitz Wimarc, who was still alive in 1069 but had been succeeded in or before 1075 by his son Swein. Robert was Sheriff of Essex and the office was later held by Swein. Swein made his castle at Rayleigh, which became the head of his honor and from that time the manor of Theydon Mount was always held of the Honor of Rayleigh. In 1086 the manor was held of Swein by one Robert. Swein was succeeded by his son Robert of Essex, the founder of Prittlewell Priory, and Robert of Essex was succeeded by his son Henry of Essex.

_____________________________
Robert de Essex, son of Swein of Essex, whom he had succeeded by c 1114. Married Gunnor, daughter of Roger Bigod, by whom he had issue his son Henry. She married secondly Haimo de St Clair. He cannot have been the Robert of Essex who was married to Adeliz, daughter of Alberic II de Vere, as is often stated, since his widow was certainly Gunnor, who had a son Hubert by her second husband Haimo; Haimo was succeeded by their son Hubert between 1137 and 146, around the time that Adelisa occurs as wife or widow of Robert of Essex. The Rotuli de Dominabus shows that Adelisa was certainly married to a lord of the Essex fee. The solution therefore would seem to be that Robert fitzSwein was succeeded by a son Robert of Essex, possibly by a wife previous to Gunnor. This Robert had been succeeded by his brother Henry (who attested a charter of Stephen in 1140) by 1146 at the latest. Late in his life Robert fitzSwein founded the priory of Prittlewell as a cell of Lewes, for the souls of his wife (a possible reference to a dead first wife), his parents and of his grandmother Beatrice, attested by Alberic II de Vere and his brother Robert. Father also of Gunnor of Essex, who occurs in a dispute with the Valognes family over property of Binham. [Domesday Descendants pp450-451]
