=== Life Sketch ===
"... in the highest ranks of the Anglo-Norman aristocracy, the lords of Tancarville" (Colonial England, 1066-1215, by J. C. Holt, p. 228)
Giroldus “miles Christi" de la Ville Tancréde
aka: Gerold de Roumare
Seigneur de Roumare, le Seneschal de Normandie et Châtelain de Neufmarché
Robert son of Gerold, on his return from Wales, gave to the abbey of St. Mary of Bec the church of Clieve, Somersetshire. Roger son of Gerold being a witness; which gift was confirmed by William de Roumare, who describes the grantor as his predecessor.
Gerold was the grandfather of William de Roumare, earl of Lincoln. (Complete Peerage, new ed., vii 667.)
A charter of Henry V King of England records donations to Saint-Amand de Rouen including the donations by "Giroldus miles Christi" of "ecclesiam de Rolmare", with the consent of William I King of England, for the soul of "Emiciæ uxoris meæ", witnessed by "Osbernus de Novoforo" (Medieval Lands by Charles Cawley)
"Geroud" donated the church of Roumare to the abbey of Saint-Amand Rouen, with the consent of "Robert his son and heir", for the soul of "his wife Albereda who died XII Kal Jun", by charter dated to before Aug 1067, witnessed by "…Radulfus frater Geroudi, Hugo broc, Osbertus de Novoforo, Hugo filius Baudrici, Rogerus de Monte goimerico…"
Châtelain de Neufmarché. Orderic Vitalis records that Guillaume Duke of Normandy expelled "Belvacenses" from "castrum…Novus-Mercatus" and granted it to "Geroldo dapifero", dated to c. 1061/66.
another charter that appears to be related to the above:
"…Gerald de Neufmarché…" (Giraldi di Novomercato), subscribed the charter dated Apr 1067 under which "Willelmus…dux Normannorum…Anglorum rex" confirmed rights to the abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire.
GERAUD (-after 1066). Dapifer. The Brevis Relatio de Origine Willelmi Conquestoris records that "Geraldo dapifero" contributed 40 ships towards the invasion of England in 1066.
Earls of Lincoln (Roumare)
Gerold (d after Apr 1067) was the son of Walter le Ewrus, count of Rosmar and brother of Edward viscount Wiltes (ancestors of the earls of Salisbury (Annals of Lacock Abbey, Appendix I, Book of Lacock, p. i.) The Complete Peerage says this father was ‘a fictitious person” (CP, vol. XI, p. 373). [FMG do not list a son named Gerold for Gerold I (or Geraud as they call him].
Gerold was Chatelain of Neufmarche as was his father before him. A charter of Henry V of England records donations to Saint-Amand de Rouen by ‘Giroldus miles Christi’ of Roumare, with the consent of William I of England for the soul of his wife Emicia (Dugdale Monasticon VI.2, Abbey of Saint-Amand, Rouen, p. 1101. ) And ‘Geroud’ donated the church of Roumare to the abbey of Saint-Amand Rouen with the consent of his son Robert for the soul of his wife Abreda (charter dated before Aug 1067). He married Aubreye (Aubreda) [parents unknown]. She died before 21 May year unknown.
Gerold and Aubreye had at least three children: Robert (d after 1096); Roger (d. before 1098) who married Lucy daughter of Turold sheriff of Lincoln, and Guy.

Among the witnesses were Ralph, brother of Gerold, and Hugh son of Baldric. Robert son of Gerold, on his return from Wales, gave to the abbey of St. Mary of Bec the church of Clieve, co. Somerset, Roger son of Gerold being a witness, which gift was confirmed by William de Roumare, who describes the grantor as his predecessor."

Note: One of the foremost of the Viking's with Rollo was Tancrède. He was with Rollo at St. Clair-sur-Epte, and receiving his reward of the land of and surrounding what was to become Tancarville, settled there and eventually was built a fortified Castle on his demesne, le Ville de Tancrède, located on the first promontory guarding the mouth of the Seine River.
