=== As a monk St. PeterÕs Monastery HOLDERS ===
As a monk St. PeterÕs Monastery HOLDERS of the CASTLE of BERKELEY (I)Roger, styled "Senior," who, having, between 1068 and 1071, been madeProvost of the manor of Berkeley by Earl William Fitz Osbern (to whom ithad been granted at the Conquest), took the name Of DE BERKELEY from hisresidence there, and was confirmed in his office by the King about 1080.At the time of the Survey 1086, Berkeley was farmed by him from theCrown. He was tenant in capite of Dursley, Cubberley, Dodington, &c., and(not improbably) was identical with " Roger," farmer of Barton Regis,Bristol. On 17 January 1091 he became a Monk of St. Peter's, Gloucester, and died 1093. [Complete Peerage II:123-4, (transcribed by DaveUtzinger)] From ÒMy ClanÓ: ÒThe Barclays were a family which came overfrom France with the Norman Conquest. The first spelling of their namewas Ôde BerchelaiÕ, believed to be the AngloÐSaxon version of ÔbeauÕ,meaning ÔbeautifulÕ, and ÔleeÕ a ÔmeadowÕ or ÔfieldÕ. The early settlersin Gloucestershire bore the Norman forenames of Roger and Ralph. DomesdayBook lists them as owning twenty hamlets between the Rivers Wye and Usk.ÓFrom ÒThe History of the Surname Barclay: ÒRoger de Berchelai came toEngland with William the Conqueror and was granted Berkeley Castle inGloucestershire. This early form of the name was believed to be theAnglo-Saxon version of 'beau' meaning beautiful, and 'lee', a meadow orfield. Roger was mentioned in the Domesday Book as well as his son, John.In 1069 John de Berchelai accompanied Margaret (later St. Margaret) toScotland. In gratitude for his service, King Malcolm (Canmore) grantedhim the lands of Towie, near Turriff, in Aberdeenshire, as well as thetitle, Barclay of that Ilk. 900 years of Barclay history in Scotlanddescend from John's three sons, Walter, Alexander, and Richard.Ó
