Sir Robert was granted the governorship as Earl of Northumberland by King William The Conqueror in 1068. But he and his compliment of between 500-700 Knights were so ruthless & cruel to the native inhabitants of the land, that on 28 January 1069 the people rose up in rebellion and slaughtered his Knights and set fire to the Bishop’s home in Durham that Sir Robert was sleeping in also killing him.
