The name Roger may well be wrong because archived information suggests that he was actually the first of the Williams. There is a suggestion that he wasn't with William the Conqueror in 1066 but had remained in Normandy to protect William's interests. When eventually he came to England he was rewarded by the Conqueror's son by being given the Manor of Rising in Norfolk.the following is an abstract of one such story :- "The Doomsday Book (1086) shows that before and after 1066, Rising was a mere outlying member of the great manor of Snettisham. The Saxon Archbishop of Canterbury, Stigand held it, from 1052 until his overthrow by the Normans in 1070. In about 1090 King William II ("Rufus") gave it to the newly arrived William d'Albini." NOT Roger !!

To return to the first William, it is clear that his grandsons weremere infants even if born in 1066, and therefore I believe that it wasthe William, then Pincerna, and probably also Roger, his son, who werecompanions of the Conqueror in his expedition; Roger's eldest brotherWilliam being in disgrace in Normandy at the time, and not restored tofavour, or allowed to enter England before the reign of Rufus, or itmay have been Henry I.

Ancestral File Number: G60B-R7 Roger d'Aubigny; marrie d Amice. [Burke's Peerage] ------------------------------------------------------ Aubigny, Alibini, etc., Earls of Arundel Saint-Martin d'Aubigny: Manche, arr. Coutances, cant. Perie rs. The early history of the family will be found in The Comple te Peerage, surname Mowbray, new ed., vol. ix, pp. 366-7 . The details of their benefactions to the abbey of Lessa y as confirmed by a charter of Henry II, 1185-1188, identif y St-Martin d'Aubigny with the Aubigny which was the capu t of their Norman honour; thus the "ecclesiam de Folgeriis " is Feugeres 2 1/2 kil. SE of Aubigny, the "feria Sancti C hristofori" mentioned in conjunction with the "forum Albinn eii" is St-Christophe-d'Aubigny, a parish now united to tha t of St-Martin, and "Marchesis" is Marchesieux, 5 kil. NE o f Aubigny. There is no trace of a feudal castle at Aubign y itself, but Gerville found nearby at Le Mesnil-Vigot th e remains of a considerable castle with a well-defined mott e, then known as "le chateau de St-Clair".
