=== Life Sketch ===
Emmeline d'Abitot, Roger’s sister, was the wife of Walter de Beauchamp. She brought to this marriage and they lived at Elmley Castle, the construction of which is credited to her uncle, Robert d'Abitot le Despencer (Robert the Bursar).
WALTER [I] de Beauchamp of Elmley Castle, Worcestershire, son of --- ([1080/95]-[1130/May 1133]). His birth date is estimated very broadly based on his marriage before 1114. Henry I King of England notified "Osberto de Abetot et ministris [et] forestariis de foresta de Feccham" that he had granted a fox-hunting licence in his forest in Feckenham to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [1110/16]. Henry I King of England notified "Osberto vicecomiti et omnibus forestariis de Wirecestrasera" that he had granted a wolf-hunting licence in his forest in Worcestershire to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [1106/13]. Henry I King of England granted "totam terram Rogeri de Wygrecestra," in and around the town of Worcester, to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [1114, after 15 Aug]. Henry I King of England notified the bishop of Worcester that he had granted "vicecomitatum de Wigresestrasia" to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [Dec 1113/Apr 1116]. "…Walto de Bello Campo…" subscribed the charter date [3/10] Jun 1123 under which Henry I King of England granted the lands of "Edrici fil Chetelli" to "Walto de Gloec." Henry I King of England notified the bishop of Worcester that he had granted "terram que fuit Adelize uxoris Ursonis de Abbetot sicut ipsa Adeliza eam ei concessit" to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [1123/Jul 1129]. The 1130 Pipe Roll records "Walto de Belcapo" in Wiltshire (two entries) and in Gloucestershire. m (before Aug 1114) [EMMELINE], daughter of URSE de Abitot & his wife Adelisa ---. Round states that the wife of Walter de Beauchamp was the daughter of Urse de Abitot but he does not cite the corresponding primary source which confirms that this is correct. Ellis says that "Emmeline Roger’s sister was wife of Walter de Beauchamp, who obtained the fief of Urso and the shrievalty of Worcestershire, which Henry I confirmed to him, together wih the office of one of the king’s dispensers which Robert brother of Urso had formerly held, and the land given him by Adelisa the widow of Urso." If this information is all correct, it appears to establish Emmeline’s parentage and marriage. The corresponding sources are set out in the Beauchamp cartulary, and quoted above under Emmeline’s husband’s entry. The documents do not explicitly state that Walter’s wife was the daughter of Urse de Abitot and brother of Roger de Abitot, but this is a reasonable implication. The latest date of her marriage is assessed from the dating of the first of these charters. The primary source which confirms her name has not yet been identified

Note: Urse d'Abetot[a] (c. 1040 – 1108) was a Norman as well as a medieval Sheriff of Worcestershire and royal official under Kings William I, William II and Henry I. He was a native of Normandy and moved to England shortly after the Norman Conquest of England, and was appointed sheriff in about 1069. Little is known of his family in Normandy, who were not prominent. Although Urse's lord in Normandy was present at the Battle of Hastings, there is no evidence that Urse took part in the invasion of England in 1066.
Urse built a castle in the town of Worcester, which encroached on the cathedral cemetery there, earning him a curse from the Archbishop of York. Urse helped to put down a rebellion against King William I in 1075, and quarrelled with the Church in his county over the jurisdiction of the sheriffs. He continued in the service of William's sons after the king's death, and was appointed constable under William II and marshal under Henry I. Urse was known for his acquisitiveness, and during William II's reign was considered second only to Ranulf Flambard, another royal official, in his rapacity. Urse's son succeeded him as sheriff but was subsequently exiled, thus forfeiting the office. Through his daughter, Urse is an ancestor of the Beauchamp family, who eventually became Earls of Warwick.

Publication: Name: http://www.sussex.co.uk/history/bramber-castle.htm;
Note: Bramber castle whose name is taken from the Saxon 'Brymmburh' meaing fortified place, was built shortly after the Conquest by William de Braose to guard the then sizable port on the river Adur. Little remains of the castle except one wall of the keep about 75 feet high (24 m) and portions of the perimeter wall in the NE of the site. The mound on which it is built looks like a gigantic motte but is natural and there is a pre-conquest motte within the walls, which dates back to saxon times. From the site it can be seen what a very fine defensive position the castle occupied. During the Civil War the castle was attacked and destroyed by Parliamentary forces, who used the nearby church as a gun emplacement.
The church was originally built in 1075 as a chapel for the castle and housed a small Benedictine college. Part of the original nave remains, but much damage was done in the seventeenth century and the Victorian restoration is not good. The present chancel is housed in the original tower and transepts.
The only remaining part of the castle is the remain west wall of the keep.Several smaller sections of the perimeter (curtain) wall exist on the north and east sides. It is likely the locals used the stone in their own buildings, after the civil war. In Victorian times the Castle Hotel and Pub in Bramber village rented the castle grounds as a pleasure park and tea rooms.

Note: [EMMELINE] . However, Ellis cites none of the corresponding primary sources. The relevant charters are set out in the Beauchamp cartulary: (1) Henry I King of England granted "totam terram Rogeri de Wygrecestra", in and around the town of Worcester, to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [1114, after 15 Aug][21]; (2) Henry I King of England notified the bishop of Worcester that he had granted "vicecomitatum de Wigresestrasia" to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [Dec 1113/Apr 1116]; and (3) Henry I King of England notified the bishop of Worcester that he had granted "terram que fuit Adelize uxoris Ursonis de Abbetot sicut ipsa Adeliza eam ei concessit" to "Waltero de Bello Campo" by charter dated to [1123/Jul 1129][23]. The documents do not explicitly state that Walter’s wife was the daughter of Urse de Abitot and brother of Roger de Abitot, but this is a reasonable implication. The latest date of her marriage is assessed from the dating of the first of these charters. The primary source which confirms her name has not yet been identified. m (before [1114]) WALTER [I] de Beauchamp of Elmley Castle, Worcestershire, son of --- (-[1130/May 1133]).
