«b»Biography«/b»
Colswein (also Colsuain, Colsuen, Kolsweinn) was an Englishman who was granted estates in Lincolnshire, which he was holding at the time of the Domesday Book. He wasn't holding any of these estates in 1066, although he did hold four tofts at Barlings which had belonged to his nephew (nepos) Cola or Col in 1066.
This might indicate that Colswein was a much younger son of the family, as he had a nephew old enough to hold land. A very rough estimate for the birth date of Colswein could be 1040 or perhaps later.
Apart from the four tofts mentioned, the rest of his estates appear to have been granted by William I 'the Conqueror' for services. What these services were, is unknown, but it's possible he may have been town-reeve of Lincoln. Part of the lands granted by King William, included undeveloped land outside of the city of Lincoln, where he built 36 houses and 2 churches; one of which was St Peter's ad fontem.
Colswein, is recording as holding 56 manors in Lincolnshire in the Domesday Book, of which most he was tenant-in-chief, probably holding them directly from King William I.
He probably died before about June 1101, as a writ by Henry I addressed to the principle land holders in Lincolnshire includes Picot, son of Colswain.
