Biography
Sibyl de Basset
Birth and Parents
William Farrer, in a footnote to a charter, notes that Matilda's mother Sibyl was aged 50 in 1185, therefore Sibyl was born about 1135.
Cawley states that Sibyl de Basset was born before 1135. Cawley adds that Sibyl was the daughter of Richard Bassett and his wife Matilda, Matilda in turn being the daughter of Geoffrey Ridel and his wife Geva.
Sibyl's father was Richard Basset, who died between 1135 and 1144. He was a royal judge and sheriff during the reign of King Henry I of England (1100-1135). Richard Basset was the son of Ralph Basset, who was a royal justice under Henry I. Wikipedia notes that Richard's father Ralph Basset, Sibyl's grandfather, was also a royal justice. Keats-Rohan confirms that Richard Basset was the son of Ralph Basset, who was a royal justice under Henry I.
Sybil's mother, Richard Basset's wife, was Matilda, the daughter and eventual heiress of Geoffrey Ridel (d. 1120), some time between 1120 and 1123. Matilda had a brother Robert, who was mentioned in her marriage settlement. By the terms of the settlement, Robert Ridel was placed under the guardianship of Richard Basset until he was knighted and married to Basset's niece. The marriage settlement describes Matilda's dowry as being worth four knight's fees. In about 1122 Richard Basset married the eventual heiress of another justice and the marriage settlement has survived. Richard Basset married Matilda, the daughter and eventual heiress of Geoffrey Ridel (d. Basset also received the right to arrange marriages for Matilda's sisters. Robert's lands were to come to Basset if Robert had no children. Not long after the settlement was written, Basset was in possession of the lands that should have been Robert's. In 1129-30 Richard Basset was co-sheriff of eleven counties. Basset and his wife founded a monastic house in 1125 from their lands, which before the donation were equivalent to 15 knight's fees. He died between 1135 and 1144. Basset witnessed a royal charter in 1135 but was dead by 1144, when his lands were granted by the Empress Matilda and her son Henry to Richard's son Geoffrey Ridel.
Marriage to Robert II de Cauz
Since Sybil Basset was was born about 1135, estimate that she was married at the age of 17, or 1152 to Robert de Cauz, born 1120,
She married Robert [II] de Cauz, son of Robert [I] de Cauz & his wife Isabel de Ferrers (-1168). "Her parentage and marriage are confirmed by the Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 which records "terra eius in Riscinton" held by "uxor que fuit Roberti de Caux et mater uxoris Radulfi filii Stephani, Cambellani domini regis, filia Ricardi Basset et soror Willelmi Basset…L annorum et amplius", adding that the land was "de baronia Radulfi filii Stephani"."
The de Cauz manor was named Laxington. It had been held by a Saxon named Tochi before the Conquest, it was held by Goiffrid de Alselin afterwards, with Walter (I) de Caus for a tenant. In the time of Henry I (1100-1135) it was held by Raph de Alselin and Robert (I) de Calz, perhaps son of this Walter. Robert (I) in turn had a son Walter (II), born in the 5th year of King Stephen (1140) who had a son Robert (II). Robert (I) witnessed the foundation charter of Lenton. Walter II's son Robert (II) sent his certificate to King Henry II (1133-1189), as other barons did, in Henry's 12th year (1145).
Robert II, like his mother Anneis, made a contribution to the hospitallers of Saint John of "Hierusalem". When Robert II died, about 33 H. 2 (1166), he left "his wife a widow, being fifty years old or more...she was daughter of Richard Basset, and sister of William, and had a daughter wife of Raph Fitz-Stephen, Chamberlain to King Henry 2."
If this account of Thoroton's 1796 History of Nottinghamshire is correct, Sybil was aged at least 50 in 1166, thus born no later than 1116.
Walliam Farrer writes, "Matilda was the daughter and coheir of Robert de Caus, by Sibyl his wife, daughter of Richard, and sister of William Basset. As her mother was aged 50 in 1185, Matilda de Caus cannot have married Adam son of Peter much before 1175, and her husband was deceased by 1185, when she had become the wife of Ralph Fitz-Stephen, the royal chamberlain, who rendered account in 1194 to the scutage for the king's redemption in respect of the knights' fees late of Robert dee Cauz. Thoroton erroneously makes Ralph Fitz-Stephen the first husband of Matilda, whereas he was clearly her second husband, and in her right he accounted in 1189 for the rent of the forest of Sherwood.
