  !Robert De Gernon came to England from Normandy with William the Conqueror. He was of the House of Boulongue, and a kinsman of the Conqueror, who granted him for his services, large estates, forty-one Lordships, principally in county Essex, one of his seats being in Stanstead. He was Baron of Stanstead Montfitchet, so called from the village on "Montfiquet", near Bayeaux in Normandy in France, from which he came.
