=== English Prince. Had he not died unexpe ===
English Prince. Had he not died unexpectedly in August 1153, this young man, a notably energetic soldier, would either have succeeded his father Stephen as King of England or, at the least, have made life very difficult for Henry II. Although in April 1152 Archbishop Theobald and the English bishops refused to anoint Eustace as Stephen's successor, he had long been groomed as heir. By arranging his marriage in 1140 to Constance, sister of King Louis VII of France, his mother Matilda of Boulogne had created a vital ally and one who was all the keener to help Stephen and Eustace when the future Henry II married Louis's divorced wife Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152. Eustace's sudden death led his father to give up the sturggle to keep the throne of England for the house of Blois. Source: Who's Who in British History, page 307. Collins & Brown. London, England.
