=== Notes and Sources for Arkill... ===
In 1068, Arkill, being the most powerful chief of the Northumbrians, made a treat of peace with the Conqueror, who accepted his son, Gospatric, as a hostage for his fidelity. Arkill joined Edgar Atheling in a desperate attack on the royal fortess at York where William Malet was governor. They were surprised by the king, many of them slain or taken prisoner, but Arkill was among those who excaped. Arkill was with the Danes in their failed attack York in 1069. It is said that Arkill escaped to Scotland, and king Malcolm granted him lands which afterweards constituted the earldom of Lennox, his grandson Alwyne, son of his son Arkill being the first earl.

Carlton was one of the vills given by Bishop Aldhun with his daughter Egfrida to Uctred son of Earl Waltheof. Uctred afterwards repudiated her, and she married a Yorkshire thegn, Kilvert son of Ligulf, by whom she had a daughter Sigrid. She was again repudiated, and became a nun. Sigrid married Arkil, who, after her death, restored Carlton to the bishopric [Simeon of Dur. Opera (Rolls Ser.), i, 215-20].
