=== Life Sketch ===
Estimated birth around 1015 AD; possibly at Mumby, Lincolnshire?
Date and place of death unknown, but he is recorded as holding lands in 1086.
In the Domesday Book of 1086 – the ‘Great Survey’ - Swein son of Svavi is listed as holding in 1066, before the Conquest, 14 landholdings in Yorkshire, 1 in Nottinghamshire, 1 in Derbyshire and 7 in Lincolnshire. In addition, it is believed that Swein the Noble, listed in the Domesday Book, is the same man as Swein son of Svavi, and he held the following lands - 11 in Derbyshire and 7 in Nottinghamshire. Some of the landholdings listed as 'Swein' are also those of Swein son of Svavi, and add further lands in Yorkshire, Notts, Derbys, Lincs, and add property in Leicestershire. Full details in the online version of the Domesday Book
In 1086 few lands remained. Only 4 in Lincolnshire, and 1 in each of Notts, Derby and Leicestershire
The Domesday Book mentions Waltheof - 'In Hallam ("Halun"), a manor with sixteen hamlets, and states “This land Roger de Busli holds of the Countess Judith." (Hallam, or Hallamshire, is now part of the city of Sheffield), but Roger de Bully was a shadowy figure, often absent. There Earl Waltheof had an "Aula" [hall or court]. Sheffield was the largest and central part of Hallam, and Swein would have possibly received a sympathetic ear from Waltheof, retaining some control over his vast holdings in Strafforth. His holdings in Derbyshire were lost, and his few holdings elsewhere, were in hostile areas.
Records show that Swein was a thegn of considerable importance in Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire '...who had soke and sake and toll and team (tol et thaim) and the King’s custom, of two pennies:'
It is probable that he fought at Fulford Gate and Stamfordbridge in 1066, but unlikely that he was present at the Battle of Hastings.
