«b»Biography«/b»
The appearance of the water bouget is in the early arms of the Banastres.
Robert was born about 1040 in Brittany.
In 1066 he came over to England with William I and is listed in the Battle Abbey Roll.
«b»In Wales«/b»
Twthill (Toothill) castle, Denbighshire, Wales, was a 'motte and bailey' style castle and was erected in 1073 by Robert of Rhuddlan, cousin/nephew of Hugh d'Avranches, Earl of Chester at the command of William the Conqueror.
Using this castle as a base, Robert of Rhuddlan subdued the Welsh and established control of much of North Wales. (Twthill Castle was replaced in 1277 by what is now known as Rhuddlan Castle.)
Robert Banastre served as a Captain under Robert of Rhuddlan (Robert was the grandfather of another Robert Banastre who lost Prestatyn in 1167 to the Welsh and moved to Lancashire).
Shortly after 1086 Robert became mesne tenant of Prestatone under earl of Chester. Prestatyn is mentioned in Domesday as one of the berewicks attached to Rhuddlan. Prestatyn at this point was probably a hill fort or a motte and bailey.
«b»Issue«/b»
He had 1 known son, Richard, (Most books overlook this son and go straight to listing his grandson Robert as his son)
He passed away after 1075, most likely in Wales.
