=== Life Sketch ===
Letitia de Malpas
Born about 1080 in England
Daughter of [father unknown] and [mother unknown]
Mother of Agnes (Malpas) de Malpas
Died after 1120 in Malpas, Cheshire, England
Brother: Richard Mailard
Cotgreave notes that "In both of the charters that name her, her actions were witnessed and allowed by her husband Richard and 'fratre suo' Richard Maillard." [8] Cotgreave adds that it is more likely Maillard was Letitia's brother than brother-in-law.
A Richard Mailard, apparently a brother of Letitia, is named in one of the charters, and Keats-Rohan states that Letitia de Malpas was the sister of Richard Mailard. In addition, Keats-Rohan notes that the lands of Rainald Maileart were among those confirmed to Troarn by William I in 1068. [3]
Husband: Richard FizNigel
The charters many mention a Richard who may be Letitia's husband. Cotgreave theorizes that this Richard may be the same Richard whose father was Nigel and whose daughter was Agnes de Malpas. [9]
Suggested Daughter: Agnes de Malpas
Cotgreave notes: "The fact that Agnes de Malpas' father was called Richard makes it tempting to suggest that she may have been a daughter of Letitia Malpas and her husband Richard, but there is no other hint to support such a claim." [10]
Whether or not she was Letitia's daughter, Agnes de Malpas is identified in early charters. [10]
"One of the many tantalizing documents in understanding the early barony of Malpas is a deed by which a woman called Agnes de Malpas gave lands in Kegworth to Calke Abbey in Derbyshire. The deed descried her as a daughter of a man called Richard Fit
Do We Know the Name of Letitia's Father?
Keats-Rohan in her Domesday Descendants reported that Letitia of Malpas was born Letitia the daughter and coheiress of Robert Fitz William, who flourished in 1086. [3]
Before Keats-Rohans' research, a number of authors including Ormerod described Letitia as the daughter of Robert FitzHugh de Malpas, born 1040.
Collins's Peerage of England as well as The Baronetage of England, refers to her as Letitia, both using Sir William Dugdale and Mr. Erdeswicke as sources.
Robert Fitz-Hugh, baron of Malpas, held the manor of "Calmundelei (vulgo Cholmondeley)" and twenty-nine others in Cheshire, England, to Domesday Book in 1086 according to T. C. Banks. [16]
Robert FitzWilliam may actually be Robert FitzHugh according to a discussion by Peter Stewart on soc.gen.medieval. [17] but at this point combining people into one is premature.
There is no evidence that Robert FitzHugh, baron of Malpas, was an illegitimate son of Hugh I, earl of Chester. Earl Hugh who did have a son, Robert, a monk at the abbey of Sain-Evroul, Normandy, appointed in 1100 Abbot of Bury St Edmunds. [18]
Letitia de Malpas, born 1138, possible daughter of Robert Malpas de Malpas, born 1040, companion of Hugh d'Avranches but not his son; married William le Belward, daughter of Robert FizHugh, born 1110. No children.
Hugh "Lupus" d'Averanches, Earl of Cheshire, named as Barons two of his cousins, both who were named Robert. as follows: (a) Robert de Rothelent (lived near Chester - known adversary of the Welsh) (b) Robert de Malpas, also known as Robert Fitz Hugh, Baron of Malpas. [19]
Robert de Malpas was given ownership of Chistleton 1071 by Hugh "Lupus" [2]
Did Letitia Marry Richard Patrick?
"Keats-Rohan, in DD under her name shows Letitia de Malpas, wife of Richard Patrick, as daughter and coheiress of Robert Fitz William of Malpas, with no connection to Earl Hugh." [20]
William Patrick, who died in 1184, had a son, William (Whalley Coucher Book, 8).[21]
Were Letitia and Mabella the same person?
Letitia is called Mabel in George Ormerod's The History of County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol II, pg. 628
In Ormerod's "barons of Malpas" pedigree, Letitia is the daughter of Baron Robert FitzHugh, Baron of Malpas and Unknown Dedol; the wife of Richard Patric, the mother of William Patric and the sister of Mabillia FitzRobert of Malpas.
