=== Life Sketch ===
Baron Geoffroi (Geoffrey), Lord of Rie, was born circa 0943 at Ryes (aka Rie), a village near Bayeux, Lower Normandy, France. His exact parentage is unknown but he was a Norman nobleman and Seigneur (Lord) of this section of Lower Normandy, under the Dukes of Normandy, vassals to the the King of France. This is what was said by a contemporary monk, writing around 1040 AD.
"Geoffrey de Rie was living c. 980. His son Odo Fitz Geoffrey gave half the church of Rie to Fescamp Abbey, which was confirmed 1027 by Richard II of Normandy (Neustria Pia, 218)."[1]
Lord Geoffrey was the grand-father of Baron Hubert de Rie who in 1047 CE saved the life of young William, Duke of Normandy, and future Conqueror of England, by affording him shelter when the Duke was being chased by an armed enemy band. Hubert offered his liege lord his three grown sons to escort him to William's stronghold city of Falaise, about 80 kilometers away, avoiding the enemy by their superior knowledge of the terrain. It is said he (Hubert) even led those chasing the Duke away in the opposite direction.
William the Conqueror never forgot this loyalty and he rewarded Lord Hubert's four sons[2] richly with several prime English manors after the 1066 Battle of Hastings; all four are mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book. Their holdings, concentrated in Nottingham, Derby, Stafford, Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk and Kent, comprised nearly 5% of former Saxon-held lands handed out to Norman nobles in the 11th Century.[3]
Little is known of Baron Geoffrey's life; not even the name of his wife. His only recorded son, Eudes (aka Odo) "Fitz Geoffroi" de Rie, who succeeded him as Lord of Rie (spelled Ryes today), was born ca. 0973. Eude's son, born ca. 1000, was Hubert "Fitz Odo" de Rie, who assured the family's fortunes in England by his generous acts of loyalty to William the Conqueror when the latter was fighting for the right to succeed his father, Duke Robert, in the 1040s. Baron Geoffrey de Rie died at his castle in Rie, Lower Normandy, France, just after 980 AD.
