Note: ROBERT DE CLAYTON, a man of valour, and skilled in arms, who came into England with William the Conqueror, was born at Caudevec, in Normandy, and for his laudable services had the manor of Clayton, in Lancashire, given him. He had three sons, John, William, and Robert, and two daughters, Mary and Alice. John de Clayton went with William II. into Northumberland, in 1090, against Malcolm, King of Scotland, who had invaded England, and was slain in battle near Penrith, in Cumberland.
