=== Life Sketch ===
Biography
Keats-Rohan, in her story of 12th century English people refers to him as Siward de Arden in his entry.
She notes the following facts:
His father was Turchil of Arden in Warwickshire.
The tenancy-in-chief which his father had held in 1086 (Domesday Book) was turned into the lordship connected to the new earldom of Warwick, created by William II.
The Arden family continued to hold under the earls, as mesne tenants.
"The charters of his sons Hugh, Henry and Osbert Rufus for Kenilworth reveal that by his wife Cecilia he had a large family including two further sons, Richard and Joseph, and daughters Cecilia and Felicia". This will be discussed below.
Birth Estimate
An Abingdon charter estimated to be from 1066-1087 mentions Siward as "adolescente", still during the lifetime of his father. Siward must have thus at least have been born significantly before Domesday if not before Hastings.
Issue
The sons can be found listed in Kenilworth charters.
In one Kenilworth charter by "(H)ugo de Ardena filius Siwardi" the witnesses were "Cecilia mater Hugonis ipsius, Osbertus, et Joseph, et Ricardus, fratres eiusdem Hugonis".
In another "(H)enricus de Ardena filius Siuuarci" mentions "Cecilia matri nostre".
Crouch and de Trafford makes the order of birth clear, at least for the first 3 above-mentioned sons. But that would seem to suggest that the order was Osbert, Hugh, Henry, different from most genealogies. In other words it seems to be a case where the inheritance was divided between all the sons, and somehow not on a primogeniture basis.
1.) Osbert de Arden. (Appears in many genealogies as a brother of Siward, but other documents show he was son.)
2.) Hugh de Arden
3.) Henry
4.) Joseph
5.) Richard
6.) Cecilia. Hugh "confirmed his sister Cecily a grant of a virgate and meadow at Curdworth to Canwell Priory (Benedictine co. Stafford)"
7.) Felicia. Received a grant of land in Baginton from her brother Henry.
Death
Historian David Crouch says he died 1139. Watson says there is no record of him after 1130.
Watson writes:
He was still alive in 1130 for in the Pipe Roll of that year he was pardoned 30 shillings of Danegeld under Warwickshire, and 10 shillings under Oxfordshire. Siward may have died before 1135, if it is correct that his son Henry was granted Baginton and Ryton on Dunamore by Henry I. He was survived by his wife Cecily, who occurs in the charters of her sons Hugh and Henry.
