ARTAUD [II], son of GERAUD & his wife Gimburgis --- (-[993 or 999] or [11 Oct 1000]). "Artaldi comitis" donated property to the church of Saint-Irénée de Lyon by charter dated "pridie Kal Jul, xlviii anno regni Chunradi" ([985/86]), subscribed by "domni Artaldi…comitis…cum…conjuge…Tetbergiæ…domni Ugonis abbatis fratris eius, Adcelinæ abbatissæ…"[39]. "Artaldus comes, Gerardi quondam nobilis viri et Gimbergiæ filius" donated property "in pago Lugdunensi in ago Cegniacensi…in villa Toriniaco" to Savigny by charter dated 994, subscribed by "Artaldi comitis et uxoris eius Theodebergiæ"[40].
"Artaldus comes" donated property to Cluny by charter dated Apr 995[41]. It is possible that the seigneurs de Beaujeu (see the document BURGUNDY DUCHY NOBILITY) were related in some way to the comtes de Lyon et de Forez. Samuel Guichenon, in his Histoire de la Souverainté de Dombes written in 1662, cites earlier secondary sources which quote an epitaph (disappeared by the date of Guichenon's work) which records the death in "the year 99" of "Artaudus comes Lugdunensis et comes Forensis et dominus Bellijoci et Umfredus frater eius et mater eorum qui obiit anno 99"[42].
Guichenon cites another version of the epitaph, from "une ancienne généalogie manuscrite" which he found in the archives of the "chapitre de Saint-Jean de Lyon"[43], which reads "Artaudus comes Lugdunensis ac Forensis, dominus Bellijoci, anno 999" and "Artaldus filius et mater eius".
The editor of the 1874 edition of Guichenon records yet another version, from "la chronique trouvée à Belleville" which reads "…Artaldus comes Lugd. et Forensis dns Stephanus comes frater eius et Amphredus Bellijoci dns et pater et frater eorum, obiit dictus Artaldus 993"[44].
Guichenon's conclusion is that none of these versions is likely to be genuine, based on his supposition that pre-1000 epitaphs are infrequent and that those which exist record only names and titles not the territories ruled[45]. Paradin notes that “deux escussons des armoiries de Forez et Beaujolais” were on the epitaph[46].
Auguste Bernard confirms that the inscription could not therefore have been contemporary as such arms did not exist in the 10th century[47]. We are therefore left with little evidence to corroborate the claimed family connection with the seigneurs de Beaujeu.
m (before 1 Jul [985/86]) as her first husband, TEUTBERGA, daughter of --- (-9 Jun ----, after 13 Apr 1013). Her marriage is confirmed by the charter dated 994 under which "Artaldus comes, Gerardi quondam nobilis viri et Gimbergiæ filius" donated property to Savigny, subscribed by "Artaldi comitis et uxoris eius Theodebergiæ"[48].
"Artaldi comitis" donated property to the church of Saint-Irénée de Lyon by charter dated "pridie Kal Jul, xlviii anno regni Chunradi" ([985/86]), subscribed by "domni Artaldi…comitis…cum…conjuge…Tetbergiæ…domni Ugonis abbatis fratris eius, Adcelinæ abbatissæ…"[49].
She married secondly ([1001/08], repudiated) as his second wife, Pons Comte de Gévaudan et de Forez (-[26 Feb 1011/1016]), who was murdered by his stepson, Artaud Comte de Forez, in revenge for the repudiation of his mother Teutberga[50]. "Poncius…comes…Gabalitanensis telluris necnon et Forensis patriæ" donated "ecclesiam Langat…in comitatu Gabalitensi, aliam ecclesiam…Favairolas…" to Saint-Julien de Brioude, for the souls of "genitorum suorum Stephani et Alais et uxoris eius Theotbergæ et filiorum eius Stephani et Poncii vel fratrum eius Bertrandi et Willelmus et nepotum eius Stephani, Rotberti et Willelmi", by charter dated Feb [1010], signed by "Roberti vicecomitis, Willelmi fratris eius…"[51].
"Tedberga comitissa" donated property to Cluny for the souls of "senioris mei Artaldi et filiorum meorum Artaldi et Giraldi" by charter dated Mar 1010[52]. It is noted in the compilation that the document was subscribed by "Artaldi senioris eius, Artaldi filii eius, Giraldi filii eius" but that these subscriptions are only found in the cartulary version, the subscribers being unrecorded in the original charter[53]. There is clearly a mismatch between these signatories and the date of death of Artaud [II], assuming that both his death date and the date of the charter are correct.
The 13th century obituary of the Eglise primatiale de Lyon records the death "V Id Jun" of "Tyeburga comitissa que dedit Sancto Stephano duos anaphos argenteos et unam fibulam auream cum preciosissimis gemmis"[54]. "Theuterga…comitissa" donated property to the abbey of Ainay for the soul of "senioris mei Artbaldi" by charter dated 13 Apr 1012, subscribed by "Rothildis filie sue"[55].
Artaud [II] & his wife had three children:
1. ARTAUD [III] (-[11 Feb] ---- or [24 Mar] ----, before [1017]).
2. GERAUD (-[5 Mar or 20 Sep] after 1046).
3. ROTHILDIS (-after 13 Apr 1012).

Note: He is also named Artaud II of Lyon (? - † before 1010 ) by some authors.
Artaud II of Lyon
Title of nobility Count
Biography
Spouse Thiberge of Limoges
Child Géraud of Lyon
He was mentioned count in Lyon and he is often considered as the first "count of Forez". It is possible that he benefited from this title through his marriage to Countess Thiberge de Forez . His parents had possessions in Forez but his father ( from the line of Viscounts of Limoges? ) Does not seem to have carried the title of count.
Summary
Family origins and first mentions
The church of Dracé (10th-12th century), where Artaud held a plaid shortly before becoming a count around 980
The Saint-Irénée church in Lyon founded by Artaud. Family burial place of the Counts of Forez .
Artaud came from the upper aristocracy, it is certain that before him members of his family had already held public office during the period of Hugues le Noir [1] such as Viscount Artaud I mentioned before 979/984 [2] . Hubert Gerner, the anthroponymic indicate a common origin with family Bermond / Guigue / Guichard and Artaud would make up the line to the prefect Bermond early IXth century [3] .
The following have been reported as potential ancestors of Artaud [4], [5]:
Artaud and his wife Hildegard (910 / 922- 938 ), who donated to the Abbey of Cluny in the chapel Saint-Victor Ajoux [6] . This donation was confirmed by King Raoul [7];
His brother Géraud († around 938 ), husband of Ermengarde and father of Artaud (future viscount and uncle of Artaud II?) And Girard (father of count Artaud II?), Owner of Quincié-en-Beaujolais or Quincieux [8] ;
In 944 , Artaud and Géraud appeared in the assistance of the Marquis Hugues le Noir during a plea in Thoissey, arbitrating the disagreement between Cluny and Viscount Adémar [ 9 ] .
A "secular Artaud" subscribed to the founding charter of the abbey of Ris in 978 [10].
A mention at the Terra Artaldi in Saint-Georges-de-Reneins allows the localization of the possessions of the family group of "Artaud" near those of the family of Viscount Guigues .
An Artaud (his uncle?) Is mentioned twice in Dracé :
For the first time around 960, Artaud approved the donation to Cluny of property located in Thoissey [11].
A second time during the holding of a plea where he already exercises the functions of justice (after 974): arbitrating in favor of the abbey of Cluny a retrocession of goods to Corcelles-en-Beaujolais [12] .
Finally, Viscount Artaud Ier is recorded in the obituary of the church of Lyon on April 9th for having donated to the Church of Lyon the villa of Lucenay before 970. It is probably about the uncle of Count Artaud.
Hubert Gerner hypothesized that the young Artaud, son of Géraud and promised to a certain Adelaide, receiving from King Conrad and Queen Mathilde dependencies of the abbey of Saint-André-le-Bas de Vienne around 975/80 [13], [14], was the one who would become the founder of the line of the counts of Lyon and Forez [15].
In a first charter of donation in Savigny (before 994) it is said "count", "son of the late Géraud, of noble lineage, and of Gimberge" [16] . His parents appear to have been in possession of both Forez [17], when they donated their possessions in Rozier-en-Donzy and Albucennacum [18] ( Bussy-Albieux ?) To Savigny , and in Lyonnais (Apinost [19] ). They also donated from the Church of Monthieux to the Abbey of Saint-Pierre in Lyon through their daughter Adaltrude who was a nun there, then probably abbess [20].
In the sources, they seem to have been possessed Beaujolais , south of the Dombes , in Forez and in Roannais [21].
It is probably he who appears with other " militias " in an act of Burchard II [ 22 ] .
The fact that we do not know the details of his accession to the title of count and the context of violence that accompanies his first mentions led historians of Lyonnais to consider him as a usurper [ 23 ] . The sources suggest rather that the count title was granted to him by the king at the time of the accession of Burchard to the episcopal throne [ 24 ] .
He acted as a skillful diplomat through the donations he made to the abbey of Savigny, to the church of Saint-Just and to Saint-Irénée [25] , ensuring the support of the prelates from the great feudal families of the region in order to assert his position there [26] .
Biographical elements
Between 984 and 993 [27], Count Artaud recognized the damage he caused to the outbuildings of the abbey of Savigny [28] during a first conflict carried out "both for the acquisition and the defense of the honor linked to its function "and donated land located in Forez and present-day Beaujolais [29], [30], [31] to the abbey . The donation is recognized by the Council of Anse of 994 [32] .
In 993 he established an impressive deed of foundation for the church of Saint-Irénée in Lyon [ 33 ] . He donated the lands of Létra [34] there for the burial of his brother Étienne and the soul of all his parents. He established in the Lyon church his burial place and that of his family, the necropolis of the counts of Lyon and Forez (which was destroyed by the Protestants in 1562 ).
In 995 , Artaud made a donation to the abbey of Cluny of the church of Saint-Pierre de Maroglio (Marroles, today a commune of Saint-Jean-Soleymieux) [35].
Some authors place his death in the 990s [36], [37]. It seems that this date (99?) Could have corresponded more likely to that of the death of his mother Gimberge [38] .
In March 1010 , Artaud may have died during the donation to Cluny made by his wife of her possessions " on the road " ( Grand-chemin, Sevelinges ?) [39] .
He was buried in the church of Saint-Irénée [40] . His widow Théodeberge subsequently married Pons de Gévaudan .
Offspring
He married Thiberge (Théodeberge) de Forez [41], [42] , probably the daughter or niece of Charles-Constantine of Vienna [43], [44], [45] .
We know of two sons [46] and a daughter.
Geraud I first who succeeded him after the death of Pons Gevaudan ;
Artaud III who assassinated Pons de Gévaudan around 1015;
Rothilde, attested by a donation from Théodeberge [47]
