  Gerneber was a Saxon noble who probably assisted in the restoration of
  The Saxon Line over The Danish Line in 1042, because in the time of
  King Edward the confessor he held eleven manors in the district and
  had possessions valued at eleven pounds. He and his tenants must have
  strongly resisted the Norman Conquerors, because in 1086 we find his
  properties under the French Overlord Iibert de Laci, who allowed
  Gerneber to keep 4 manors and possessions valued at little more than
  one pound. His household and tenant families probably only numbering
  between 30 and 50. Almost a century passes before we find any further
  written historical details. Although Gamel (or Gamal), who was
  reputedly one of his sons (b. Circa 1050AD), is mentioned in the
  Domesday Book as a land holder in the Calder Valley.
