Biography
Birth and Parents
Rhiwallon ap Dyngad of Maelor Gymraeg, Wales, was born about 965.
Maelor Gymraeg
He was known as Rhiwallon ap Dyngad of Maelor Gymraeg. Maelor is a border area of north-east Wales. It originated as a Cantref of the Kingdom of Powys, focused on Bangor-on-Dee. The Maelor was first divided from the rest of Wales by the construction of Offa's Dyke in the eighth century, but was reclaimed for Wales during the reign of Stephen of England (1135-54) by Madog ap Maredudd of Powys. The Maelor Gymraeg, the "Welsh-speaking Maelor", is an ancient district of Wales to the west of the River Dee, and corresponds approximately to the later parishes of Bersham, Erbistock, Marchwiel, Ruabon and Wrexham in the historic county of Denbighshire which was created in 1536. The Maelor Gymraeg is separate from The Maelor Saesneg, the "English-speaking Maelor," an area of Wales along the eastern border that merged with Cheshire.
Trevor Manors
The Hugh Thomas pedigree, says the Trevor manors (Trevor and Llys Trevor) were given to Cuhelyn ap Tudor and his brother Meurig after the death of Tudor ap Rhys Sais (c. 1120).
Issue
1.) Cynric ap Rhywallon, Lord of Whittington, married Judy, daughter of Ivor Hen, Lord of Rhos. Boyer, following Bartrum, shows no wife for Cynwrig.
2.) Cynwrig ap Rhiwallan died in 1075.
The Chronicle of the Princes of Wales records that "Gruffudd son of Cynan fought against the men of Iago and of Mona, and the Gwyneddians killed Cynvrig son of Rhiwallon" in 1073.
According to the 13th century History of Gruffydd ap Cynan, Gruffydd defeated "Trahaiarn son of Caradoc and Cenwric son of Rhiwallon, Kings of Powys and all Gwynedd" and, with help from "Robert of Rhuddlan…nephew to Hugh Earl of Chester" imposed himself as king of Gwynedd after prevailing at the battle of "Gwaet Erw".
Research Notes
Disambiguation A
He is NOT the Rhiwallon who married Lettice (Letita); that was a later Rhiwallon who was born about 1130.
He is confused with Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn, Prince of Powys, who was killed in 1069 at the Battle of Mechain in Montgomeryshire, Wales.
Disambiguation B
Because the names Cynwrig and Rhiwallon were repeated several times there is possibility of some confusion:
Cynwrig ap Rhiwallon ap Dingad, born about 1000. Married Judy ferch Ifor Hen.
Cynwrig ap Rhiwallon ap Cynwrig, born about 1100. Married Annes ferch Idnerth.
