=== Life Sketch ===
Finn Arnesson (1004-1062) was a Viking caudillo and Scandinavian royal adviser to Olaf II the Holy and Harald III of Norway and later Svend II of Denmark. Feudal lord ( lendmann ) of Austrått, and jarl of Halland.
Finn was one of the eight children (seven brothers and one sister) of the lendmann Arne Arnmodsson and his wife Tora Torsteinsdatter (daughter of Thorstein Galge ). Finn married the niece of King Harald, Bergljot Halfdansdóttir, daughter of Halfdan Sigurdsson ( Halfdan Hadafylke ) and sister of Sigurd Syr.
Finn appears as a character in the Heimskringla saga of Icelandic Scallop Snorri Sturluson, as well as his brothers Arni, Torberg and Kalv Arnesson. Snorri dedicates an episode where Finn energetically defends King Olaf against Thorir Hund of Hålogaland.
In 1028, Finn and his brothers Arni and Torberg with the Jarl of the Orkneys, Rögnvald Brusason accompanied Olaf Haraldsson into exile in Kievan Rus. They returned with King Olaf, fighting in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030, where King Olaf died.
Under the rule of King Harald III, Finn maintained the hacienda and lands in Austrått near Ørland in Trøndelag. In 1051, his brother, Kalv, died in battle serving King Harald on the island of Funen. Finn had the conviction that King Harald had purposely killed Kalv and rebelled against the crown. He went to Denmark and placed himself in the service of King Svend II, who named him Jarl and assigned him the government of Halland.
In 1062, Finn fought in the battle of Niså ( Slaget ved Niså ) armed conflict between King Svend and King Harald, on the Halland coast. Harald won the contest and King Svend escaped. Finn refused to escape and was captured. King Harald spared his life and left him free in Halland.
Finn's daughter Ingibiorg Finnsdóttir married Thorfinn Sigurdsson, jarl of the Orkneys and after her death with Malcolm III of Scotland in second marriages. Another daughter, Sigrid Finnsdóttir, married the jarl Orm Eilivsson, grandson of Håkon Sigurdsson.

=== Fin was King Harald Hardrade's lenderman ===
Fin was King Harald Hardrade's lenderman at Austrat in Yrjar. Fin and all of his brothers, except Kalf, were great friends of Harald. Harald came to Fin and asked him to effect a reoncilation with the bondes and Hakon Ivarson over Einar Tamberskelfer's and Eindride Einarson's murders. Fin agreed on the condition that, if he succeeded, Harald would allow Kalf to return the country and regain all of his former holdings and power. Fin was able to bring about the reconcilation by agreeing that King Magnus' daughter, Ragnhild would marry Hakon. However, Ragnhild would not marry a man who had no title and Harald would not make Hakon a jarl because he already had one. Both Hakon and Fin felt that Harald had broken his word. After a while, Hakon and Svein had a falling out. Hakon then returned to Norway. Orm was dead at this time and Harald made Hakon his jarl. Then Hakon was able to marry Ragnhild. Then Harald let Kalf Arneson come back into the country and made him his lenderman with all of his forrmer holdings and power. The following summer, Kalf was killed, by the Danish, in battle. Fin thought that Harald had deliberately put Kalf in the front of the battle, without adequate, timely, help, so that he would be killed. Fin became so angry that he left Norway and went to Denmark where he entered into King Svein's service. Svein made Fin the Jarl of Halland. Fin fought with Svein at the Battle of Nis River. He was captured, but Harald spared his life and let him go. Levde på Harald Hardrådes tid og var bror til Kalv Arnesson. BIOGRAPHY: According to the medieval historian, Snorri Sturluson, Finnlived for a time at Austratt in the district of Yrjar in western Norway.He had been on several viking expeditions. He was a well-liked steward ofKing Harald Sigurtharson in Norway. The king had Finn intercede for himand make reconciliation with his enemies who were angered about someslayings. In one reconciliation attempt, an enemy by the name of Hkonagreed to be reconciled to the king if he was given Ragnhild, a relativeof the king, in marriage. The king agreed, but said, "Neither you nor anyelse will find it advisable to obtain Ragnhild in marriage unless it bewith her own consent." Ragnhild did not want to marry a man who was notof princely rank. The king would have granted the title of earl to Hkon,but there was a long-standing practice of having just one earl at a time,and he did not want to take the title away from the current Earl Orm.(Later after Earl Orm died, Hkon was given the title and Ragnhild marriedhim.) Some other events and the death of Finn's brother caused Finn to beso angered at the king that he left Norway. He joined with King Svein inDenmark, and was given the title of earl and ruled the province ofHalland, where he was in charge of defense against the Norwegians. Finn had been on viking expeditions to the west with GuthormGunnhildarson andd Hakon Ivarsson for some summers. Finn was in the court of King Olaf who asked him to carry amessage to Halogaland to levy troops against Knut the Powerful.While there he confronted Thorir the Hound to pay fines for theslaying of Karli. Thorir could not raise the 30 marks of goldand was to pay the fine later. He proceeded to join King Knutand gave him an abundance of money and valuables he had withheldfrom Finn. Meanwhile Finn rejoined King Olaf's fleet. He andbrothers Thorberg and Arni fought along side King Olaf atStiklestad while brother Kalf likely dealt Olaf the death blow.Kalf, on the winning side gave Finn and Thorberg a man-of-war toreturn to their estates in the south. He also served King Harald Hardrade as a steward and was sent toNidaros to bring about reconciliation among the peasants andthen to the Upplands to get Haakon Ivarson to agree not tooppose the King. Haakon agreed if King Harald would give hisrelation Ragnhild in marriage. Later, when he went to the King,he was told he would have to get Ragnhild's agreement, but sherefused as Haakon was not a King. He then asked for an earl'sappointment and was refused. This angered Finn. Later, bothHaakon Ivarson and Finn joined King Svein of Denmark and Finnwas made Earl of Halland. He was captured by King Harold'sforces in a sea battle in 1062 from which he refused to flee. Hewas nearly blind at the time.
