THE HOUSE OF MANAW
Cadell, Anarawd, and Mervyn are recorded in the Triads as the "Tri theyrn tal- eithiawg," or three diademed princes of the Isle of Britain. (My v. Arch. ii. 64.)
Another note: One of the Triads speaks of Anarawd and his brothers as 'Tri theyrn taleithiog Ynys Prydain,' or 'Tri thywysog taleithiog,' 'the three diademed princes of the Isle of Britian.'
[Dictionary of National Biography I:370]
.........................................
ANARAWD, is stated by some that he was the eldest son of Rhodri Mawr, who was sovereign prince of all Wales, which he divided between his three sons, on his death in A. D. 876. Anarawd had for his share Gwynedd or North Wales : Cadell had South Wales, and Mervyn had Powys. It has long been a matter of dispute whether Cadell or Anarawd was the elder brother. Dr. Owen Pughe, in his Cambrian Biography, calls Cadell the eldest; so likewise does Price in his Hanes Cymru, p. 392, but in p. 397, Anarawd is called the eldest. This dispute gave rise to a treatise by the eminent antiquary Vaughan of Hengwrt, entitled " British Antiquities revived," which was printed in Oxford, 1662, 4 to. and of which a second edition was published at Bala in 1834,4to. In this it appears to be well argued that Anarawd was the eldest, and had paramount authority over his brothers. However, his crown was far from being light, as he was engaged in constant wars with the Saxons. In 880, he fought the battle of Cymryd near the town of Aberconwy in Caernarvonshire, where he defeated the Saxons with great slaughter, and avenged the death of his father, who had been slain by them in "Anglesey. This battle is called in Welsh history," Dial Rhodri." His reign is also remarkable for the migration of the Northern Britons in 890, who, being pressed by their enemies, left Stratclyde, and were hospitably received by Anarawd, who gave them lands in Denbighshire and Flintshire, on condition that they expelled the Saxons who had taken possession of them, which was satisfactorily accomplished. In 892, Anarawd invaded his brother's territories in South Wales, which he laid waste with fire and sword. In 900, Cadell, who had previously reduced Powys under his dominion, died, and Anarawd thus became sovereign prince of all Wales, and reigned until his death in 913, when he left three sons,Edwal Vool, Ellis, and Meurig.
From a "Historical Chronology of the Early British Kingdoms, Part 5: AD 805-937" at www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/kingdoms:
878 King Rhodri Mawr of Gwynedd, Powys, and Seisyllwg returns to his kingdoms, but is killed fighting the Mercians of King Ceolwulf II. His kingdoms are divided amongst his three sons, Anarawd, Merfyn and Cadell respectively. The Vikings winter in Dyfed. Death of King Run of Strathclyde. His son, Eochaid, succeeds to the throne and allies himself with his mother's cousin, King Giric of Alba. The two rule all Scotland together as join-monarchs.
880 King Anarawd of Gwynedd inititates a revenge attack on the Mercian armies and defeats them on the River Conwy.
c881 King Anarawd of Gwynedd and his brothers begin extensive military campaigns to quell resistance in Powys and Seisyllwg.
c885 Kings Hyfaidd of Dyfed, Elisedd of Brycheiniog and Hywel of Glywysing are harassed by the armies of King Anarawd of Gwynedd. They seek the protection of King Alfred of England and submit to his overlordship. Anarawd seeks an alliance with the Norse Kings of York.
894 King Anarawd of Gwynedd's shaky alliance with the Vikings collapses. His kingdom is ravaged by the Norsemen. Anarawd is forced to ask for help from King Alfred of England and submits to his overlordship. Alfred imposed oppressive terms and forces Anarawd to confirmation in the Christian Church with Alfred as godfather.
895 King Anarawd of Gwynedd is supplied with Englis troops to assist in his reconquest of Seisyllwg. he is successful and his brother, King Cadell, is finally able to take his rightful place on the Seisyllwg throne.
Cadell ap Rhodri (854–909) was King of Seisyllwg, a minor kingdom in southwestern Wales, from about 872 until his death.
Cadell was the second son of Rhodri the Great of Gwynedd and Angharad, a princess from Seisyllwg. In 872 Angharad's brother Gwgon, King of Seisyllwg, drowned without leaving an heir. Rhodri became steward over the kingdom, and while he was unable to make a legal claim to the throne, he was able to install Cadell as king.[1]
He passed it to his son, Hywel Dda, at his death in 909. Cadell and Hywel together also conquered Dyfed in 904–905, establishing Hywel as the king in that region. After his father's death, Hywel ruled the kingdoms jointly as Deheubarth.

Cadell, King of Seisyllwg
(born c.840)
(Latin-Catullus, English-Catullus)
Cadell was given the Kingdom of Seisyllwg by his father, Rhodri Mawr in the late 9th century. However, it is unclear how much independence he managed to assert after his father’s death. His son, Hywel Dda (the Good) married the heiress of the King of Dyfed and united the two kingdoms to become the first King of Deheubarth. [www.britannia.com/bios/ebk/cadelcn.html]
_______________________________
In the division of the dominion of his (Cadell's) father he was given Deheubarth and a large part of South Wales. His brother Merfyn received Powys. He and his brothers made so much trouble for the neighboring kingdoms that they were compelled to seek help from Alfred the Great. In 893 he was attacked by his brother Anarawd, King of Gwynedd, who invaded and plundered Seisyllwg. After the death of his brother Merfyn, Cadell drove out his nephews and appropriated Powys to himself. He died about 909 and his kingdom was divided between his sons, Hywel and Clydog. In the Mostyn Manuscript #117 the pedigree of his distinguished descendant, Llewelyn ap Gruffyd, is traced back through Cadell to "Adam, son of God." If the compiler did not draw on his imagination for parts of this pedigree he must have had access to records not now in existence. [The Weaver Genealogy]

Cadell (d 909), king of Ceredigion and afterwards of Powys, was one the six warlike sons of Rhodri Mawr, the most powerful of the early Welsh kings. If we can trust a late authority, he was Rhodri's eldest son, and received as his patrimony Ceredigion, with the palace at Dinevwer, and an overlordship over his other brothers. In 877 Rhodri was slain by the Saxons, and Cadell entered upon his turbulent reign. In conjunction with his brothers he ravaged and devastated the neighbouring states of Dyved and Brecheiniog to such purpose that the latter gladly accepted the help of King Alfred against a nearer and more terrible foe. Not long after the sons of Rhodri were compelled themselves to become Alfred's men. The harmony between the brothers did not long survive their defeat. In 894 Anarawd, the king of Gwynedd, joined the English in a devastating inrode into Cadell's territory, and burnt remorselessly all the houses and corn in Dyved and Ystrad Towy. Soon after Rhodri's death Cadell is said to have driven his brother Mervyn out of Powys and added it to his possessions; but as Mervyn continued alive until 903, and was styled king of Powys, it is very improbable that a lasting conquest was effected. Anyhow, as Anarawd continued to reign in Gwynedd, Cadell certainly was not, as the 'Gwentian Brut' asserts, thus made king over all Wales. Indeed, it is quite probable that Anarawd was the elder of the sons of Rhodri. Besides civil feuds and Saxon invasions the period of Cadell's reign was signalised by repeated invasions of the 'black pagans,' as the Welsh called the Irish Danes, which culminated in 906 in the destruction of St David's. Three years afterwards Cadell died. Three of his sons are mentioned by the chronicles, Howel, Clydog, and Meurug. Of these the eldest became Cadell's successor, and was celebrated as Howel Dda, the wisest and best of the Welsh kings. [Dictionary of National Biography III:627]

Cadell, the 2nd son of Rhodri Mawr, succeeded to the Kingdom of South Wales, which was called Deheubarth, their residence being Dynevor or Dmasvawr, the Great Palace. The fatal policy of Roderick in dividing his dominions soon became apparent from the conduct of his sons. For in 892/3 we find Anarawd uniting with the English against his brother Cadell; when they invaded his territory and devastated the country of Cardigan and the vale of Towy. And again we find Cadell, Prince of South Wales, taking forcible possession of Powis on the death of his brother Mervyn in 901. Cadell died in 907, leaving three sons: Howell Dha, i. e., Howell, the Good, Meyric and Clydawc, of whom the latter was killed by his brother Meyric about 917.

CADELH who became Prince of South Wales 877; took Powys from his brother Merfyn.
