=== With his brother Horsa he was invited to ===
With his brother Horsa he was invited to Britain by Vortigern to helpexpel the invading Picts. However, Hengist availed himself of theopportunity to settle his own people permanently in Britain. He gave hisdaughter Renwein to Vortigern in exchange for the county of Kent. Histreachery became proverbial, and he was eventually caught and executed.(Internet: www.biblebelievers.org.au/nation01.htm)

=== Hengest and Horsa, who led the Saxon ba ===
Hengest and Horsa, who led the Saxon bands who invaded England in 446. William of Malmesbury says that they were grandsons of the ancient Woden, from whom almost all the royal families of these barbarous nations deduce their origin, and to whom the nations of the Angles, fondly deifying him, have consecrated the fourth day of the week Wodens-day, and the sixth day unto his wife Frea. For the fatherland of the English race we must look far away from England itself. Three tribes of Germany, Angles, Saxons and Jutes, by whom Britain was subdued, seem originally to have constituted but one nation, speaking the same language, and ruled by monarchs who all claimed descent from the deified monarch of the Teutons, Woden or Odin. Jutes with their neighbors the Angles dwelt in the peninsula of Jutland, which parts the Baltic from the North Sea. In the adjoining Holstein there is still a district called Anglen. Hengest and Horsa had gone to England at the request of the British King Vortigern to help him in his battles with the Picts. They were at first given the Island of Thanet as a home, but soon quarreled with their British allies, and gradually possessed themselves of what became the Kingdom of Kent. In 455 the Saxon Chronicle records a battle between Hengest and Horsa and Vortigen, in which Horsa was killed, and thenceforth Hengest reigned in Kent until his death in 488.

Hengist (d 488) and Horsa (d 455), two semi-legendary Jutish brothers, said by Nennius and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle to have led the first bandof Germanic invaders to Brittain. They landed from Jutland at Ebbsfleetin the Isle of Thanet in 449 to help King Vortigern against the Picts, and were rewarded withthe gift of Thanet. Soon after they turned against Vortigern and weredefeated at Aylesford, where Horsa was slain. Hengist, however, is saidto have conquered Kent. Both names mean "horse".
