Biographic Notes Of Joseph Krienert, Sr.
Very unexpected was the death of Mr. Joseph Krienert, The old Man across
from the church" the evening of the feast of St. James, the apostle. He
was feeling fine in the early morning, complained at once of fever and
chills, then brain complications and pneumonia set in quickly. Withinan
hour, in spite of the doctor's effort, he drifted into a coma, which ended
toward evening July 25, in a quiet and peaceful death.
Healthy in the morning, a corpse in the evening. Never sure of the
approach of the inevitable. "Ye know not the day nor the hour." At that,
it seems a blessing. While this goes in print another brave pioneer, who
has toiled the Nebraska soil most of his life as a successful farmer, has
been laid to rest on St. Mary's cemetery. He never received the official
title "Master Farmer" as other men with a great deal of pull but his hands
and weather-beaten features earned him that distinction of uncited heroism.
The cradle of the Krienerts was Delbrueck, Westphalen, Germany. Although
born In this country January 16, 1858, he had the characteristics of a
true son of "Der Roten Erd."
Krienert was born near St. Louis, Mo. In 1878 the family moved from
Florissant, Mo., North to Nebraska, to the township of St. Charles near
West Point. Here they began their successful farming, not without allthe
hardships of the pioneer days. On November 3, 1883, Joseph Krienert was
united in marriage to Miss Augusta Ulrich. To the happy union the
following children were born, Theresa, Josefa, Anna, Mary, Joseph,
Ferdinand, Sophia - now Sister Walburga O S F, Rosa, Heinrich, Adolph,
Cecilia and Augusta.
On the 20th of January, 1920, the family moved to Osmond and has since
been substantial asset to the community of Osmond, which became theirhome
after many years in Cuming county. All living children could not be
present at the funeral which took place Monday morning from St. Mary's
church. Seven of the son-in-laws functioned as pallbearers. Louis
Brester, Mat Gubbels, Adam Frickenstein, Henry Reiman, Jacob Daschnerand
Ed Beckman. Among the mourners from a distance were, Mrs. John Schorn,
Monterey; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schorn, Monterey; Mrs. Meister, Wayne; Mrs.
Anna Hesse, Snyder; Mrs. Litz, Dodge; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schorn, Mr. and
Mrs. Herman Schorn, Mrs. Battenhorst, Monterey; Mrs. Charles Meister,
Monterey; Mr. and Mrs. Tony Meister, Miss Mary Oligmueller, Miss Theresa
and Anna Ulrich, Sister Vincentia, O S F, Ferdinand Ulrich from Creighton,
J. Gubbels. Randolph; Joseph Frickenstein, Monterey.
Altogether there were 54 persons present at the dinner which was held
after the funeral. The number of relatives and friends indicates thata
deeply respected man and citizen had passed to his reward. A man who can
look over the stately row of 54 grandchildren has not lived in vain. That
man has been an asset to the state and nation and it also may be added,
with the tenaciously kept faith of his ancestors which all of the family
profess, a pillar of Catholic life in Nebraska. Flowers grew In profusion
around the humble cottage he had selected for the days of his retirement,
they will grow on his resting place, on his grave, as long as a Krienert
lives around here. From his porch, from his living room, he could attend
the divine services in the church. We miss him there. There will be a
vacant chair. Requiescat in Pace.
