=== Life Sketch ===
Broachfael ap Elisedd Powys, fl 760s
The son of Elisedd, little is known of his reign, except hat it would have paralled that of Mercia's greatest king, Offa. Whatever lands Elisedd had gained in the first half of the century, Brochfael probably lost in the second half. Offa undertook many raids into Wales during his reign, some as far west as Dyfed, and Powys was little more than a doorstep to his mighty army. Although the dates of Brochfael's reign are not known, it is possible he reigned for a considerable period. It was during his reign that Offa's Dyke was constructed, a remarkable feat of engineering which must have taken many men many years. It is a sign of Offa's power that it could be achieved at all, and it is probable that it was the men of Powys and of Glywysing who were pressed into service to complete the work. It served as much as a line of demarkation as a defence, and as such shows that Offfa effectively agreed a border between the Welsh and the Eglish would help sustain peace. Brochfael would therefore have benefitted from the Dyke in the short term, though in the long term it spelled the end for Powys. Brochfael was succeeded by his son Cadell.

=== The first ruler of Powys to establish hi ===
The first ruler of Powys to establish himself in the bardic memory. This suggest that he may have been the first to carve out a recognizable kingdom from the mass of petty chieftainships that no doubt existed in eastern, northern and central Wales. His capital was at Pengwern, the Celtic fortress that became Shrewbury. He must have maintained good relations with his neighbours, for he developed his kingdom without a history of bloodshed.

=== Brochwel Ysgythrog, more correctly 'Ysgi ===
Brochwel Ysgythrog, more correctly 'Ysgithrog,' i.e. 'of the tusks' (fl 550), prince, was, according to tradition, the outstanding figure in the older line of rulers of Powys, insomuch that the poets came to call Powys the land of Brochwel. He was the son of Cyngen and the father of Cynan Garwyn and of S Tysilio, founder of the ancient church of Meifod. As his grandson, Selyf ap Cynan, fell while leading the Welsh in the battle of Chester (c 613), he cannot be the Brochmail mentioned by Bede as playing a cowardly part on the same occasion. According to the legend of S Melangell of Pennant, supported by Gerald of Wales, he had a royal seat at Shrewsbury, not yet occupied by the Mercians and bearing the Welsh name of Pengwern; this is variously placed on the site occupied later by the castle and on that of (old) S Chad's. [Dictionary of Welsh Biography p52]

Brochmael Ysgythrawg (fl 584), king of Powis, is mentioned in Llywarch Hen's elegy, a poem which Dr Guest has referred to the overthrow of Uriconium and the descolation of the Severn Valley by Ceawlin, king of the West Saxons in 584. The country of Kyndylan, the chief whose death Llywarch Hen bewails, is there called the land of Brochmael, and it is probable, therefore, that Brochmael was lord of that part of Britain, and that it was under his command that the Welsh (Britons) checked Ceawlin's career of conquest at Fethan-leag or Faddiley. When in 613 Athelfrith of Northumbria overthrew the Welsh at the battle of Chester, Baeda says that the monks of Bangor who had come to pray for the success of their contrymen were under the card of Brochmael, who stayed with them while the battle was fought, and who left them and fled when the victorious Aethelfrith attacked them. In this battle Selim the son of Cynan, was slain, and as Cynan is said to have been the son of Brochmael, it is evident that he must have been an old man at the time, and 'therefore may very well have been king of Powins when Ceawlin attacked Uriconium.' [Dictionary of National Biography II:1274]

Brochfael Ysgythrog, King of Powys
(Born c.AD 502)
(Latin: Brogmaglus; English: Brockbald)
Brochfael of the Tusks presumably had very big teeth! He was a younger son of King Cyngen Glodrydd who lived in the early 6th century. The famous Taliesin was his bard for a time. Brochfael is particularly known for an incident involving St. Melangell. This stunning young woman had taken to the life of a hermit, living in a small cell in the Powys wilds. One day, Brochfael was out hunting a hare when the creature made for Melangell's hermitage and hid in her skirts. The dogs would not attack, and the King became so enamoured of the lady's pious beauty that he asked her to marry him. She humbly declined, so Brochfael gave her land to build a monastery instead. He should not be identified with the Commander of Caer-Legion, of the same name, who died at the great battle there in 613. Brochfael of Powys was buried at Pentrefoelas in Gwynedd where the grave of a six foot man, with a covering slab bearing the name "Brohomagli", has been uncovered.
