=== Life Sketch ===
Was Selyf ap Cynan or Selyf ap Cynan Garwyn (d. About 615 ), a prince of the former Powys. He was the son of king Cynan Garwyn, the subject of one of the earliest poems in the Welsh language, namely 'Trawsganu Cynan Garwyn,' the work of the poet Taliesin. His dad was Brochfael Ysgithrog, king Powys mid 6 th . Selyf is sometimes referred to as 'Selyf Sarggadau'. His son, Manwgan ap Selyf , became king of Powys.
At that time the boundaries of Powys extending east, over the Offa's Dyke today, and include significant parts of the Borderlands. Selyf was sent by his father (some sources can be read to mean that Cynan is dead and his son reigns) to try to protect Powys from Anglo-Saxons. Selyf joined his warriors with the Brython army who fell in the Battle of Chester (615 or 616) (recorded in the Annales Cambriae) when he fought against Æthelfrith from Northumbria. This is the first connection between a king of England with Chymry. It is possible that Selyf was the leader of the Britons' forces in that crucial battle, which broke the connection between the reigns of Wales and the Old North.
Arofan is referred to as "poet Selyf ap Cynan" in the Tales of Britain. In another trio, he is one of 'Three Air Force (war leaders) of the Island of Britain', with Urien fab Cynfarch (Urien Rheged) and Afaon fab Taliesin. In a variation on one of the Trio found in the Black Book of Carmarthen, the march of Selyf is called Du Hir Derwenydd, one of 'Three Thom Edystr Ynys Prydain' (Three Phonster).
There is also a reference to the legend of the Rhonabwy Dream, as one of Arthur's knights (there is no historical basis for that connection).
Selyf was still in the middle of the Middle Ages. The poet Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr refers to the warriors of Powys as "Selyf dances."

Selyf Sarffgadau, King of Powys
(c.586-613)
(Latin: Solomus; English: Solomon)
Selyf, son of King Cynan Garwyn, was a great warrior king: his nickname was Battle Serpent. He took a Powysian army north, in 613, to join the united British force that was to fight King Aethelfirth of Bernicia at the Battle of Caer-Legion (Chester, Ches.). Aethelfirth had invaded Gwynedd in order to stop King Iago of Gwynedd restoring the former's old enemy, Edwin, to the Deiran throne. Unfortunately the British were severely defeated and Selyf and Iago were both killed.
