!BIRTH-RESIDENCE-FAMILY: Family History Library film 1429813 item 5; THE YOUNG FAMILY OF BRISTOL by Walter J. Young; NOTE: Edward III had become King of England in 1327, but he maintained ownership of a large number of lands in France where his mother was the sister of three French Kings. The Hundred Years War between England and France began in 1337 when the French King Philip VI declared he would take over French lands held by Edward. Edward in turn, formally claimed the French throne. The war lasted until 1453. The first important battle was fought in 1346 at Crecy France, where King Edward won a brilliant victory over the French. King Edward's son, called Edward the Black Prince knighted Morgan Yonge for valor on the battlefield at Crecy. The title Knight was originally used to describe warriors equipped and trained to fight on horseback. Entry to their ranks after 1300 became a mark of honor and distinction. Sometimes men were knighted on the field of battle, but the ceremony usually took place during times of peace. Any man could be made a Knight, but the honor usually went to the sons of nobility. Only certain classes of Knight were allowed to use Sir before their names. Sir Morgan Yonge married and had a son John Yonge, who was Sheriff in Bristol England in 1385. HISTORICAL NOTE: The name "DeYonge" is found in the Roll of the Battle Abbey; Burke's Peerage shows 34 Young armorial bearings and 21 castles in England.
