(Source: Burke's Peerage, 1881) The manor of Ulcombe stayed in the St. Leger family for 6 centuries until it was sold by Sir Anthony St. Leger in 1648. Ulcombe was part of the Eyhorne Hundred mentioned in Doomsday. Robert Count of Eu, held Ulcombe at Doomesday of the Archbishop. Ulcombe was "assessed at 2 1/2 sulongs TRE and now of 2 sulongs only. Robertus was probably related to the Vicomte de Chartres and to the family of Robert, Count of Eu. The St. Legers, with the Clare family, are thought to be descended from Robert, 1st Duke of Normandy.
Robertus, the "Golden Knight" was an aide-de-camp of William the Conqueror and fought in the Battle of Hastings (1066) and the Siege of Exeter (1068). There is a story that tells of William stumbling on the English beach while disembarking from his boat, and Robertus grabbing William's hand to steady him.
Robertus owned lands near Avranches and was already a large landowner in Sussex, England before the Norman Conquest. He was Master of the Chase, Lord of Sst. Leger en Yvefines-Rambouillet des Aubees.
He was awarded land in Ulcombe, Kent about 1087 after he engaged in battle with a pagan Dane and ousted him from the Manor at Ulcombe. Ulcombe was part of the Eyhome Hundred mentioned in Doomsday. (Burkes Peerage, 1881).
Robertus and his unknown wife had five recorded childdren: Ralph, Guy, Sir Jean, Robert and Sir William.
