=== Backgroung information concerning Howell ap Gwillim ap Jenkin. ===
Jenkin ab Howell was the son of Howell (Hywel) ab Gwillim (Gwylim) who married three times: Matilda verch Jevan, Ann Wallis and Maud verch Howell. They are documented as follows.
A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland states the following: "The third son, Howell ap Gwillim, m. Maud, daughter of Howell ap Rhys, and was s. by his son, Jenkin ap Howell.
A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland states: "Howell ab Gwillim, m. Maud, dau. of Howell ap Rhys, and was s. by his son, Jenkin ab Howell..."
A Genealogical History of the Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited, and Extinct Peerages of the British Empire reports: "Howell ap Gwyllim, grandfather of David ap Jenkin, jure uxpris, of Treowen, Co. Monmouth, whose descendant, William Jones, son of Sir Philip Jones, Knt., temp. Charles I., removed to Llanarth Court, Co. Monmouth, and was ancestor of Jones, of Llanarth Court, whose representative, John Jones, Esq., of that place, had, with other issue, 1. John Jones, Esq..., 2. Philip Jones, Esq...,3. William Jones...." It is noted that this is the first record naming the subsequent family Jones.
The Annals and Antiquities of the Counties and County Families of Wales states: "Hywel ab Gwilym (the third son of Gwilym ab Siencyn Herbert), m. Maud, dau. of Hywel ab Rhys, and left a son Siencyn (Jenkin) ab Hywel..."
The book "John Pidding Jones: His Ancestors and Descendants" lists Howell ap Gwillim's wife as Ann Wallis, noting she is the second wife. However, the History of the Landed Gentry, the Dictionary of the Landed Gentry, and the Annals and Antiquities, above, list the wife as Maud, daughter of Howell, son of Rhys. Maud is also listed in the book "John Pidding Jones: His Ancestors and Descendants" as the third wife. "John Pidding Jones: His Ancestors and Descendants" lists the first wife as Matilda, daughter of Jevan. "John Pidding Jones: His Ancestors and Descendants" lists a number of children, which raises the question of which wife is actually the mother of Jenkin ap Howell, the heir of Howell ap Gwillim and most certainly to oldest son or at least the oldest surviving son. If the mother is Ann Wallis, the second wife, then Matilda, the first wife, must have died before giving birth to any children, and some, perhaps most, of the listed children could very likely be from the third wife, Maud.
The Genealogies of Glamorgan, by G.T. Clark, P. 259, 'Jones (Herbert) of Treowen and Llanarth', provides the following concerning Howell ab Gwillim:
Born: Abt 1360
Gender: Male
Father: Gwilym ap Jenkin, b. Abt 1330, of Rockfield, Monmouthshire, Wales
Mother: Wenllian verch Howel-ychan, b. Abt 1334, of Cefnyddwyglwy,
Monmouthshire, England, d. 1377.
Married Abt 1360 of Cefnyddwyglwy, Monmouthshire, England.
Family 1: Matilda verch Jevan.
Family 2: Ann Wallis
Children:
1. Jenkin ap Howell
Family 3: Maud verch Howell."
The above information would appear to suggest that Howell ap Gwillim’s second wife, Ann Wallis and not Maud, the third wife, was the mother of Jenkin ab Howell. However, many private genealogies also list the first wife, Matilda, as the mother of Jenkin ap Howell, but with no historical documentation to support that supposition.
Howell ap Gwillim was the son of Gwillim (Gwylim, Gwillem or William) ab Jenkin who was married to Gwenllian Ichon.
A pedigree published in Collections Historical & Archaeological Relating to Montgomeryshire, Vol. V, pages 158-159, documents the first eleven generations of the John Pidding Jones line in England and Wales following the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066. An explanation of that pedigree follows. It begins with Herbert [Herbertus Camerarius]; followed by his son Henry FitzHerbert [Henrici Tresaurij]; followed by his son Herbert FitzHenry [Herbert FitzHerbert I or Herbert of Winchester]; followed by his son Herbert FitzHerbert [Herbert FitzHerbert II]; followed by his son Peter FitzHerbert; followed by his son Reginald FitzPeter; followed by his son Peter FitzReginald; followed by his son Herbert FitzPeter, Lord of Llanllowel; followed by his son Adam FitzHerbert, Lord of Llanllowel; followed in the so-called “B” line by his son Jenkin ab Adam [Jenkin ab Adam, alias Herbert]; followed by his son Gwillim ab Jenkin [Gwillim ab Jenkin, alias Herbert]; followed by his son Thomas ab Gwillim [Thomas ab Gwillim ab Jenkin, alias Herbert]. It is noted that Thomas ab Gwillim was the fourth son of Gwillim ab Jenkin. The John Pidding Jones line descends from Gwillim ab Jenkin through Howell ab Gwillim, the third son of Gwillim ab Jenkin. Thus, the pedigree does not follow the John Pidding Jones line after Gwillim ab Jenkin [son: Howell ab Gwillim], but rather the line of Thomas ab Gwillim.
