=== Life Sketch ===
After William the Conquerer, Duke of Normandie, defeated Harold at the Bawttle of Hastings, he became King of England and sought to create a stable border with Wales. He installed a strong group of Norman lords along the English side of the frontier, as well as shoring up the small Welsh kingdoms on the other side (including Breconshire). In 1087 he was succeeded to the throne by his son William Rufus who was unable to control these lords.
Around 1089 one of these lords, Bernard Neufmarche, began his conquest of the Welsh kingdom of Brycheiniog (now Breconshire) and by 1093 there was a full scale invasion of Southern Wales. Following these successful seizures, numerous prominent Normans received their reward in the form of lordships. One of these was Sir Humphrey Burghill (spelled many ways) who was given aws his share the lordship of Crickhowell. His lands extended into Southern Breconshire and across the border into what is now Herefordshire.
